Removing the hump in the back of my 1g [Merged 10-6] gas trunk bump tank

ANYTHING is removable. Think plasma cutter (remove gas tank first) or sawzall. A BFH won't cut it. Cut the hump out and reweld a flat sheet of metal in there to keep moisture out.

I cut mine away....well my installer did, and had no problems with anything...Used a cut-off wheel if I am not mistaken...and now its a flat as the Saskatchewan Praries...and my Sub Box/Amp Rack looks so PIMP there...

I know I plan to remove it in my next DSM. (another 90 AWD TSI)

I am just going to cut around the base of it. Toss it to the side and cut a pice of 1/16" steel 1/4" larger, drill holes and bolt it in place. And WALA

That and remove my rear seats and have a custom carpet job done all the way back to the hatch...:thumb:

Yah, bolting sounds good for now, dunno if I'd trust myself around a welder, LOL.

I too don't have the rear seats in right now, but I kind of miss them. That'll probably change when it gets warm again and racing season is in full swing. :)

Well thats not the only reasion I say bolt it in. What if for some unknown reasion you want to remove it to get to something easier? It would suck to have to cut the welds...

Also dont forget to put some sillicon rubber or something of that sort under the lip of the plate before you bolt it down..

BTW: You know the rear seats weigh something like 8lb....it's pointless to remove them for weight loss. I just tuck mine out because to many people were wanting a ride in my car and I dont like to tell my friends to kiss my ass... so I went the suttle way about it. "Sorry dude, no back seats" :thumb:

Hehehe, I use racing as my excuse to remove them...giving rides is at the bottom of my list as well, hehehehe. I woulda bought a Lexus or a minivan if I wanted to play taxi :D

try owning the fastest car in the school...... yep, "my back seats are out so i can't take you home but i can take ur g/f. sry man"

its great.... :D

Er... isn't there a large piece of gas tank sticking up inside that hump?

Making the trunk useable in the 2G might be one of the best things they did with the re-style.

No, the hump is there for the spare to mount on and you can't have a "well" for the spare because the tank is flush.

wurd, I have actually done this.haha.:thumb:

I have cut around the hump and now the gas tank sticks up through the back and you can here all the air noise now. It was a mistake but I'm trying to fix it.

I could swear it was flush on my friend's 92 talon AWD. Sorry man. I should have stated that it was a few years ago when we removed it. Well, it does leave you with a couple options. You could fiberglass over it. Or, you can now build a false floor into your trunk that is level with the gas tank. That should be more feasible with the hump removed even with the gas tank poking up.

Your right the gas tank is in the way, it also has a hump on top that goes in there. I have examined it.

No, they're saying that the gas tank has a part that fits into the hump.

sure buddy, you can cut it out... but your gas tank is gonna have one GIANT breather hole... (anotherwords, your gonna cut into your gas tank, a NO-NO)

Yo, I was able to cut it about two inches down with an angle grinder. If you have a TSi,like me,the gas tank is partway in the hump......I also raised the floor rails up one inch on the middle screw and two inches on the farthest screws near the back of the car.I used blocks of MDF and built them up to the desired height. Then I made two separate floor boards out of 3/4" MDF,they split right down the middle. To take care of the top of the gas tank, all I did was get a 2 inch thick piece of foam and placed it over the hole, that supports the middle of the floor too.I post pics when I can, hope this helps!

With the two floor pieces,it makes a tighter fit and it's easy to take ina nd out, without scratching the interior plastics.Plus,if you have bass back there, plywood sounds like sh*t.MDF deadens the bass rattle.
