I'm tearing down my W5M33 (Manual, AWD) transmission to replace some 3-4 components; I'm following the Dre/Vfaq instructions and all is going well, the viscous coupling and 5th gear assembly are out.

Now to the issue: All 3 poppet bolts and springs are removed, but I was only able to remove 1 of the 3 poppet balls with a pen magnet. I've tried removing the last two balls in the other gears.

Any suggestions? I plan to go through to the next steps and hope that I will be able to remove them later.

Thank you!

I shoot a bit of brake cleaner and use a pick to unlodge it, then use the magnet. If it doesn't work put the bolts back loose and leave the springs out. Contuine disassembly and you'll be able to get them out after you remove the case, but be careful not to lose them when you lift the case off.

Be careful with the races also. they like to slide out.

Thought I'd follow up and close this one out. I continued the disassemly after putting the poppet bolts back in without the springs.

The balls stayed put when I pulled that part of the case off, I then pulled them out from the inside.

No problems!

you could have played with the selector arm as well and they would have just popped out. but like mentioned above be careful of the races falling out, I wasn't careful which led to me completely tearing down my tran 4 times.
