While checking my center differential for compatibility with Evo 3 gears I lost one of the poppet balls so I left it out of 5th gear until I can get a new one.
In the meantime I have noticed shifting into 5th is very smooth and doesn't have that "notchy" feel the other gears do. So this has led me to wonder what the downsides of removing all the poppets or reducing the spring load on them would be. Potential concerns are:
1. Popping out of gear. How likely is this? Any dangers to the drivetrain?
2. Shift rails moving freely. I think 5th/R is the only one that could move at all with the other two being tied together so tightly. How much movement potential is there and are there any dangers for the drivetrain such as additional wear etc?
