could an impact wrench be used rather than the special tool mitsubishi says to use? also what methods of you guys used to remove them?

The special tool is used to hold the gear itself so it does not move when you try and remove the bolt, so I would imagine you will still need it even if you use an impact gun. I used a breaker bar with a pipe on the end of it to remove the bolt when I took mine off.
