Hello everyone, my question is, for anyone who has installed a remote start on the dsm, which remote start maker did you choose, and which model. i have factory (I think) keyless entry and alarm and my specific application is for my 1998 gsx with manual transmission. thanks in advance

Welcome to the forums. Not sure what your knowledge is about remote start and the differences in the starting procedure between M/T and A/T.

Since you have a 5-speed, you have the clutch-in sensor that will allow the vehicle to start. I've by-passed it by simply unplugging the connector. You'll have to do something that will allow the remote start to function without jeopardizing your car and other people's safety. I.e. starting the car while its in gear .

Really any remote start is good, just depends on what you want and like. I will probably get a bulldog remote start because I had their Keyless entry installed on my last 1G dsm and I LOVED it.

Installation is usually very simple if you're doing it yourself and if you do have the factory keyless entry, putting another one in should be easier. Remote start is a different story, but if you follow the instructions VERY closely and either look at wiring diagrams on here or get a Factory Service Manual, along with an I.Q. greater than 90, you should be set.

Again, I do recommend finding a way to create a neutral safety switch.

Anything from "DEI" will treat you good (includes... Python, viper, clifford, many more...)

Very flexible and if you are cunning, the dealer installation manuals are available on the interwebs.

Remote start is a rather involving install. Make sure you are good at splicing (solder) wires in tight places, and good with a volt meter. also you are about to make your car way easier to steal if you are not careful...

the12volt.com has a wealth of knowledge on this subject. Most manual cars are practically the same, only remote start when the ebrake is on, (you have to disable the clutch switch, or bypass it via relay...

Some people have used magnet switch proximity sensors, (the ones used on door and window home security systems, or at least similar in concept) attach one side to the stick, another to a spot next to it while it is in Neutral. or just be careful to leave it in neutral always, since a start in gear will leave your car humping whatever is in front or behind it, or up a curb.

I was probably going to go with the ebrake method. I have personally cranked the car while it was in gear and oh boy... it literally jumps 'specially with having fancy motor/trans mounts.

I had a friend that reportedly had his car accidentally start in gear, the car proceeded to do a burnout and 'bout ran him over in the garage.

Well, sounds like you have people (if not you...) that are familiar with remote start installs. And you have assessed the risk of M/T. So with that said, make a spinner wheel with all the brands of DEI on it, flick it a few times and see which child-brand you land on. They are all the same LOL. or pick a remote you like.

But stick with DEI, other brands are copies usually and are hard to find replacement remotes for. Ask how I know.

Lol, I was in my first day of driving 5-speed OK, sheesh :p.

The Viper 2-way remote start is drop-dead sexy.

Yea, definitely DEI is the way to go.

Just hook it up to the Ebrake and you will be safe with that.

I didn't know anything about remote start and never in my life attempted to do such thing, but with the help provided from a member from here and the electrical knowledge that I have, I did it my self, I install it my self and I was so pleased how things came out, and I even add some roll up window module and I'm about to add it for my sunroof as well, so now when I luck the car, It rolls up the window and close the sunroof by it self and don't have to worry about forgetting to roll up the windows.

The only bad feeling I had was once I saw all how good it came up, I forgot who was helping me out and couldn't give rep points to him, which when he gave me all the step by step, I write down all the process and did the install 3 months later, I couldn't find him and can't remember who was it which we got in contact by Email.:banghead:

I wish to save his contact. :ohdamn:

I used to install viper systems had one on my 97 gst and going to put one on my 98 sooner or later. But if ## familiar with 12volt its not bad. But I install audiovox systems now and there just as good. And someone posted not to use autopage but they are owned by dei now. The ones to stay away from are bulldog and no name units. Any dei or audiovox system is the way to go. If you have a turbo timer you will have to switch a few wires around so you can arm the alarm while the timer is counting down. Its simple to do that if you need help with it let me know best way us to message me if you do. Also I have a audiovox remtoe start on my passat turbo right now they have a nice turbo timer built in but shortest time u can set is 3 minutes

Do you still have that step by step written down?

Sorry bro, I don't have that on paper anymore which all is in my head, but it is easy to have a good understanding of the system.

I would suggest you to get help from any one here who offered their help which they have don it for yeas or several times, this is my first time doing it in my car so you will be better with them then with me, but I will be more then pleased to help you out if you want.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Compustar yet. That's all I run on all of my personal vehicles. I worked in mobile electronics for 10 years and have installed pretty much every brand out there. They're all pretty good as long as they are installed properly. DEI has some good units. I just installed a Viper 5704 remote start alarm in a 2012 Cadillac Escalade. If you are installing this remote start alarm unit on a car with a manual transmission, I would recommend Compustar. They have a built in manual transmission more so that you can only remote start the car IF you turbo timed it before its last shut off. You get to your destination, engage the e-brake, turn off the ignition, the car stays running for a minute, you exit the car and close the door before the car shuts off. If you do this, it will remote start. If you open your door after it turned off, it will not remote start. In my GMC Sierra I'm running the Compustar Pro alarm with a 2 mile range. They also have the Compustar Drone which allows you to use your smart phone as a remote. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.

Went with a Viper 5704 + DEI 507T Tilt Sensor + DEI 506T Glass sensor.

LED is nice and highly noticeable. Two-way pager is nice and sleek. The whole set-up cost me around $400 a year ago. You could probably put it together for about $300 nowadays. Add $200+ if you can install it yourself. I didn't have much a problem, even when it came to removing the old crappy alarm the previous owners had in it.

...compustar is more to pay to get it installed which DEI, we can get it for cheap and install it our self.

It's actually not really much different. The wire colors are different but each alarm comes with the wire color discription on a sticker thats on the back of the brain. You get what you pay for. All of my Compustar remotes are still functioning today. And when my 2 way paging remote finally breaks, it's $70 to replace it. My friends with DEI 2 way remotes have been paying around $100 each and it seems like DEI remotes are made cheaply nowadays.
