have been rebuilding a few engines lately. So far they have all been a success. The problem that I'm running into is that my local machine shop is closing down and the next closest is 50 miles away. I was sending in my blocks, cranks, and heads to have the shop check them over. Now, I've decided that in the long run it'll be cheaper to measure clearances myself. I've done it before and just need to buy a nice micrometer set.
Either way, assuming I can check the bearing and bore measurements myself, what other things should I be keeping my eyes open for? I won't be able to pressure test heads, or magnaflux anything. I just want to be able to check as many things as possible so that I'm not sending my parts 50 miles out for something that could be done in my shop. I know for fact that I am going to be getting an engine that seized due to lack of oil (maybe one or two more in the same condition) and I am assuming that the core(s) will be in a worse condition that the last few I have built.
I guess what I'm looking for is a small checklist of things that I should (and be able to) check before I decide if the parts need to go to the shop.
