The starter finally got too problematic on our '99 4G64 so we ordered a starter through the dealer to get an oem. It wasn't inexpensive. The part came from Mitsubishi Motors, but the box is marked Remanufactured.

The part number is M178511D (not sure why the "D" is at the end). The question is whether to turn in the factory original starter in for core $, or find a rebuild kit and keep it as a spare?

We've looked for rebuild kits and the only one we've found did not have brushes in it. Are these starters brushless? If that's the case, then maybe the winding is shot in the old one and we won't be able to save it.

Appreciate any information on this dilemma.

Startes do have brushes in them and they are fused so not a push fit replaceable as an easy option. I have one apart but no idea where it is currently, since the move over

Thank you. Alright so there are brushes. If we pull it apart, and the brushes don’t look excessively worn, we can conclude the windings are not in good shape.

Please let us know if you find any place that makes a rebuild kit.

I've put brushes in several starters. DSM and non-dsm vehicles. If the starter is just weak 9 out of 10 times the brushes are all it needs. Most starters are a 4 pole motor so generally when they get weak it is because 1 of the brushes is no longer making contact and the power is essentially cut in half.

If you have a high wattage soldering iron you can just solder the new brushes in. You will get people telling you the solder will melt when things get hot but solder melts at around 400 degrees so if your solder is melting you have more serious problems. I soldered brushes into an old IDI Diesel starter which has really long crank times and I've never had an issue.

We ordered brushes for a factory Honda alternator along with a regulator. If it needs a diode trio or rectifier, I can get them too. Its just a search to find them. We didn't want to turn in the OEM unit so we ate the core. We'll have about $60-70 in parts.
