My car has 160,000 miles on it ,I have to pull my engine already because one of my balance shaft bearing crapped out on me. anyways my compression on all four cylinders is 135-140 psi and i had my head rebuilt about 5000 miles ago. anyways i have the money to re ring the pistons, replace the bearings, remove the balnce shaft, timing belt, etc. But i dont have the money to replace the pistons and have the block bored. Anyways i was wondering if just re ringing the pistons would help my compression any ? hasd anybody ever done this?

Ok i put a teaspoon of oil in all the cylinders and it brought the compression up, so i guess what im asking is since my cylinder walls are smooth and shiny with no gaulges or nicks and my pistonsd are in good good shape should i be able to raise my compression with a new set of rings?

Your walls are mostly likely well worn after 160k miles and you might be able to get away with a hone and a new set of rings, but I personally wouldn't waste all that money on a hope kinda deal. Do it once do it right or dont do it at all.

This might go against a lot of what people think on here but we had a Representative from a well known parts company come in today and explain how if your cylinder walls are not scorched or grooved that re honing the cylinders will rob you of horsepower. They did an extensive study of this proving that with the smoother cylinder wall it will still properly seat the rings and also let you keep the power you would lose from honing. I had never heard of this before but he had dyno'd about 12 different size motor's, some of them losing up to 11hp after honing the cylinders. I wasn't completely sold on this either but I rebuilt my motor, elected not to hone the cylinders and it still seated the rings just fine. In answer to your question you could just rering your current pistons and put them back in and it would raise the compression back up to where it should be.
