Ok so here's the deal just got a new crate engine inside my 1995 GST got everything prepped for the first start up, got in and turned the engine over and the car barely wants to turn over, Im also getting alot of back-firing. The spark plugs seem to have a decent amount of soot on them after trying to crank it over a period of 15 mins or so. The coil pack is sparking fine and all the plug wires are getting a spark and I know it's getting fuel because the spark plugs smell like gas. Now the weird thing is if I unplug the cam position sensor the engine wants to crank over faster, also if I plug the cam position sensor in and unplug the crank position sensor it will crank over faster also but it both plugs are plugged in at the same time it has a hard time trying to crank. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :hellyeah::dsm:

EDIT: im running NGKBPR6ES spark plugs brand new spark plug wires crank and cam sensors are both new also. Spark plugs were gaped to 0.028

definetly hijacked your thread sorry man. anyways, i got no spark on the 3 cylinders on the right side of the engine. only the plug all the way to the left works so im changing the wires today. if i knew more id help you man

It is kind of my fault as well.. I Will keep my suggestions to each users post.. Been a long day..

Agreed, Spark, fuel, compression first.

I tired everything to get that gas out of there, but in the end I ended up having to pulle the intate manifold off and literraly pour the gas out. How finally figured it out was that I had the above 3 and my plugs were always soaked with gas and not firing. Tried blowing it out and out shot the gas. Had an "ah ha" moment and then pulled the mani. So lame.

Ok guys I was using the 4-1-2-3 firing order before and the car would start with the cam position sensor unplugged I changed the firing order to 3-2-1-4 and the car will run now with the cam position sensor plugged in. I was under the impression that 3-2-1-4 was the firing order for 1G's but my car is a 95. Any reason why this works?

I have allways used 4-1 2-3. I had no idea the firing order was different between the 1st gen and 2nd gen.

My knowledge is a bit limited, I have allways run six swaps with 1g Eprom Ecus until I got this car. (Colt/Mirage guy here).

What kind of CAS are you running? The one on the cam gear? or the one on opposite end close to the throttle body?

My cam position sensor is under the intake cam.

SOLVED car would not start with cam position sensor on because I was using 4-1-2-3 firing order I changed the firing order to 3-2-1-4 the car runs great with the cam position sensor on. Never found out why the firing order worked for 2nd gen cars.
