greetings,

stuck in a pickle! i have a 98 (7bolt) gst that just got the motor rebuilt. its still at the mechanics shop
Heres the problem; The car wont start when i turn the ignition on with the key, but it will turn on with a contraption the mechanics have thats hooked up to the battery and has a button. it idles great, no smoke or anything...but will not start whit the key. theres power. now hes trying to charge me extra ( which i am not having) to fix it. asking for your guidance and suggestion..thanks

can any of the two items you listed be damaged by the removal of the engine and a careless mechanic. ### i assure you the ignition switch worked when my engine gave out. and was parked for like6 months

its probably a cut wire to teh starter solenoid. Tell him to check power to teh solenoid when you turn teh key on. There may be a fuse for that line as wel (not sure though)

check the ignition harness

check the clutch switch on top of the clutch pedal where it meets the firewall. there is a rubber plug that tends to dry rot and fall out. it sits in a little hole on the plate that is meant to engage the the clutch switch when pressing the pedal, when it falls out the button just goes right through the hole when you press the clutch and the car thinks the clutch is not being pressed, therefore it will not turn over.
reach up there and push the button with your finger while turning the key, this is the problem I had just recently and its very common and an easy fix (replace the little plug or just unhook the switch completely) but if you do unhook the switch the car will start without pushing the clutch so always make sure you are out of gear b4 starting.

thanks guys, appreciate all the help. car is now up and running strong! time to put all my mods i have stored in my closet.LOL
