Recently i was reversing out of my garage, and i heard this loud thump coming from the rear. And then, the car starts to not reverse very well. I would have to give it some gas for it to start reversing. I also felt my front tires kinda spin, which lead me to believe that the rear wheels were somehow locking up.
I have a 1996 Eagle Talon TSi AWD.
Any ideas on what the problem is??

Thanks.

had similar issue backing out of restaurant, i felt like i hit someone and no one was there. Drove home later on that night and boom rear wheels lock on the freeway. Long story short my T-CASE gave up on me, in the wort possible place. So i check that, my o2

i have a 5spd manual, but today i was rolling down backwards in neutral and the same thing happened... And no i don't have a welded diff.
Okay, ill check the rear diff and the t-case and see if anythings messed up.

Thanks guys!

call the dealership with your VIN and ask if the transfer case recall was ever done to your car. if not, and it's the t-case they would replace it for free

^^^^^AGREED^^^^ call mitsubishi

I owned a 91 awd tsi inthe past and the rear diff did the same thing. At first It happened when i was taking off from a stop sign then it went away. A couple hours later it locked up at 45mph. Took the t-case off and it wouldnt spin anymore, completely locked. Called mistubishi when the recall just happened to come out and got it replaced with a new one. Problem solved

Well, my transfer case was completely normal, but i've figured out that the owner before put in a transmission that did not match with the original transfercase. This caused unbalanced rotation between the rear and the front. Causing the rear wheels to spin less than the front.

Also, i've recently put in a new transmission and all problems were solved. Don't mix and match transmissions with t-cases as some don't go nicely together. The previous transmission was really messed up from the crack i could see. It looked as if something broke off and hit the inside of the transmission which left a finger-sized crack.

Thanks for all your help guys!
