Rattle coming from driver side

Ok, so here is the situation.

I have a 2g gsx. 1995
Awd turbo
Act extreeme 6 puck clutch.

When I push the clutch in I hear a loud rattling noise.

It sounds exactly like something rotating and rattling against metal fingers. Kinda sounds like a piece of metal rattling against the clutch fingers.

But it is *not* the clutch or transmission.

If you listen to the transmission, you hear no noise at all, nice and quiet.

The rattling noise is coming from right around the driver side axle.

It sounds strongest towards the driver side back of the engine.

Again, the clutch side, is quiet and smooth. The car shifts fine, stays in gear fine.

It has a brand new throw out bearing and brand new clutch fork and new clutch. Ask that sends to work great.

Also, there is no noise when the clutch in not pressed in.


To make matters worse, the car turns on, runs for a moment, then dies, as if the fuel is being cut off.

Could the rattle be the crank position sensor hitting something?

What would the clutch push on to make the driver side area rattle against something?
 
I have the EXACT same problem! It only does it from 2-3K rpm. I replaced the axle bracket, because it kept rattling bolts off. Still nothing... I've been looking everywhere and can't find anything. I was thinking transfer case?? But it does it in every gear at the same rpm...Some people are saying check your dust covers on your brakes. I haven't done that yet, but it's light enough of a rattle to make sense.
 
I don't want to say it.. But it could be your crank position sensor hitting the trigger plate..

It sounds.... kinda like that. Maybe the video audio just makes it sound a bit loud.

Anyway, I pulled the trans apart, checked it all, everything was good.

I put it back together, the noise was still there. I drove around the block, after going about 5 block the crank position sensor was finally knocked out.

Yes, this turned out to be crank walk.

I got it from over-extending the clutch when holding the pedal in while turning the car on.

I now need to rebuild the engine.... :(

Best thing to avoid this in the future - make sure the clutch is never over engaged.

And make sure to remove the sensor that requires the clutch to be pressed in when the car is started. This will prevent the crank from moving due to no oil pressure at startup.
 
Indeed I was also told to do it.... after the problem occurred.

I am a sad panda :(

I guess this can not happen this way on a evo 4g63 ....
 
Clutch Safety Switch Bypass Is Just kind of a feel good mod. Releasing the clutch at 7k rpm to shift is going to cause way more stress than a little dsm starter could ever do, so I fail to see the correlation

The difference is oil pressure.

When the engine is off, there is 0 pressure on the crank. Oil around the bearings is there to not only add lubricant, but also to add pressure to keep everything in place.

When pushing the clutch in at any RPM, the clutch pressure is the same.

So the force the clutch exerts on the crank is greater when there is no added oil pressure to keep things extra solid in place.

This oil pressure is not a HUGE deal, its a small one in fact. But when you couple 0 oil pressure with OVER extending your clutch (especially a aftermarket high pressure clutch) then you get the recipe for crank walk....

Part of also what makes this car susceptible to this is that this car has no pilot bearing, there is just that little bit less holding the crank in place...
