Just to clarify, there were little bubbles for the duration of the 30 mins or so I had it running for.....does that point even more to BHG or worse?

Gotta love it,

Oh, and could anyone tell me why, if I were to do the HG, if it's worth getting the HG "set" instead of just the HG? It's about a $50-60 price difference, and if I can hold off on replacing that other stuff in the motor, I'd rather do that in a couple months, when I plan on doing a whole bunch of other stuff to my car as it is.

Thanks in advance, and I really appreciate all the help I've gotten to date.

Nothing like spending a friday night huddled over my motor w/ a flashlight,

Someone just brought something to my attention--

My old tstat had no jiggle valve, and I'm not sure I put the new one at the top. Does anyone think that could be causing my continuing air bubbling? Either way I think I'll be making sure that's northward tomorrow morning, still hoping it's not my HG, and that if anything it's a clogged heater core.

Advice = appreciated :D

Ok, so I'm going to make sure I have the tstat in there at the correct position later, and then if that doesn't work, go back to the store, and get another flush kit, and actually run it through the heater inlet hose, and then if I STILL have no luck, I'm taking it to a buddy's shop to look at it.

Ideas anyone?

ok, so I let it warm up this morning, and the upper hose got hot, and the lower did not. I presumed clog, so went and bought a flush kit. When I went to attach the tee they included, the heater inlet was all the way in the back behind the motor, so I decided not to even use it, just removed the lower rad hose, and flushed w/ a hose through the radiator. Then I filled it back up, and i still wasn't getting any drop in the level, so I'm pretty sure it's the t-stat. I thought the t-stat was just under the upper hose line that goes into the block, removed the two #4 12mm bolts, and now I'm thinking it's in the housing underneath that?

If anyone can point me to helping find the t-stat, that would be great, i'm about to search around on the forums a bit.

There is only one thing you can check to save you all this troubleshooting. Check your oil cap after you drive it for say 5 to 10 minutes or just sitting till your temp goes up, then you'll see a white milky oil under the cap, if there is then your head gasket is blown. save you the trouble next time and replace it with metal head gasket. Hope this helps.

My coolant overflow reservior was leaking and today I pulled it off to see what was going on. Turns out there was a big hole in the bottom of it so I need to get a new one. anyways nobody has one in stock ... am I safe to drain a little coolant out of the radiator and then plug the overflow nipple on the T-stat housing and just run without an overflow for a few days. Is this safe?

Don't plug it. Gatorade bottle works just fine and will hold you for quite a while. It looks so ghetto but it works great as mentioned.

Probablly not the best idea to run without it.

Just get said gatorade bottle for now. :)

am I safe...plug the overflow nipple...run without an overflow

As has already been said you probably don't want to do this.

The reason being, when your radiator cap pressure is exceeded and the overflow is blocked there is no where for the pressure to go. If that pressure increases then the next weakest link in your coolant system will fail, whatever that may be. ie: a hose, radiator cap, freeze plug, whatever.

As has been said, dump the overflow to a bottle and be sure and use the syphon return (the hose that ran into your original reservoir). If not , then be sure and check your coolant level often, because the catch bottle will not be recirculating the coolant back to the radiator. :thumb:

alright thanks ... I used a pepsi bottle and got it to fit in there. I'm going to go to the dealership tomorrow and see how soon I can get a new reservior. Thanks.

when i did my frount mount install with short route pipeing i had to get rid of my stock over flow bottle and bought a cheap universal bottle from napa, installed it, hooked up the hose and went out and did a few pulls on way to school, 10 minutes into class my teacher asked who had the red eclipse ?? me why, well it looks like it just blew up, i went out side to find coolant everywere under the hood and a fat hole in the upper rad hose, luckily that was all the problem was, turns out the bottles port for the vacumn hose needed to be drilled out to let coolant in. kinda like how u got to cut the top of the tranny oil bottle to squirt some out or nothing comes out of goes in. luckily it wasnt a freeze plug or something bad. , hint.. down block off ur coolant system from releveing its pressure.

ha I had a similar thing happen, I had a propel bottle in my car for like a week, they're pretty cheap from the dealership.

^ ^ ^ As above. The overflow isn't much more than a tidy bucket, but you do need one. Modern cars don't run with 2" of space in the top of the radiator tank as the old ones did.

thanks for all the reponses guys. I went to the dealership and got a new one for $22 but it won't be in until monday. Is there a chance of the coolant going into the reserve melting a pepsi bottle ( the plastic one )? Its been fine for the past couple of days but I'd still rather like some reassurance. :thumb:

your radiator cap has an intermediate stop. when you turn it, you will feel it. kinda like open half way. if you leave it there, it will not pressurize, and you will lose a small amount of coolant, but then it will be ok. it will run fine temporarily. just dont beat on the car until you get the new tank installed.

i seem to be having bad luck with my new car. I have a 96 gsx with a 6 bolt swap yesterday. Tonight when i turned off the car the antifreeze just spewed out on the ground from the overflow for a few minutes. It did this twice. I parked the car at a friends house and it did it, i let it cool off and drove about 1 mile to my house and when i parked it there it did it again. The electric fan is on when the turbo timer is on and the temp guage is a bar below middle. wtf is up

Yeah, replace the tstat, and keep your fingers crossed. If it's not that, it's likely to get considerably uglier, as defiant has pointed out.

Like so many of the rest of us, it's never been this old before.

Also check the radiator cap. Check, hell. Just replace the thing.

Have you checked your airbrake reservoirs for coolant? If so, then you're air compressor blew a head gasket. J/K

How did you go about filling the cooling system after your swap? Has the continued to spurt coolant since? It may have been overfilled. Let us know what you've found.

Had the same problem. FLushed the radiator, put in a new stat and it's working fine now.
