well that happened in my 88 transam and that same day the piston rings went in a few of the pistons. The engine overheated. Not saying that this is your problem with the DSM, but it could be a slight possibility.

well how do you fix this problem? i had the head gasket replaced last week. people say it could be the thermostat or the water pump.

Dude, have you done what I suggested? Is there a leaky water hose? Check all the water lines. IT CAN BE THAT SIMPLE. Don't go out a spend cash on things that might not fix the problem. Make sure you are certain that it's not a leak and lack of water. Turn the car on, drive it around the block until it starts getting hot. Pop the hood with the car running and check all the water lines, make sure you keep an eye on the temperature, wouldn't want to overheat the car. Then you should be able to spot the leaky hose. GOOD LUCK.

Okay, my car keeps almost over-heating. this only happens when i really womp on the engine and hit high rmp's. i replaced the head gasket and the thermostat before. there aren't any leaky lines whatsoever. when it gets over-heated a little, the overflow bottle is usually full and it bubbles. and when i take out the tube that goes inside the overflow bottle, it stops. so therefore, hot air or something is coming from there. could it be the water pump? and can you hear that the water pump is broke? I need some help.

Did you bleed the system of air after refilling the coolant?

Would any oil creep into the coolant if the headgasket was bad?

Not always.

Defiant, you don't have to run the system with the coolant cap off for awhile? Or does the air usually find its way out the coolant overflow tank?

I have a 91 gsx. I recently rebuilt the engine, and have all new parts pretty much on the engine. Everything seems to be okay, but for some reason, water starts to steam out of my overflow. The gauge doesn't show that it is getting hot, but water will steam out of it enough to where it is getting low on coolant, then it starts to get hot on the gauge. I have checked for leaks anywhere else, like around the head due to possible head gasket, but I don't think it could be the head gasket. Also, I know it is not the thermostat, because I don't have one in there. Someone please help me with any kind of clue, or some kind of test I can do to at least look for something, cause right now I am chasing a ghost blind, thanks -Ross

you can do a leak down test to make sure its not a head gasket. Why do you not have a thermostat in? your not getting water in your oil, or oil in your water? I had the same problem about three months ago, mine turned out to be a head gasket.

Thanks for responding! But that's really great, it's brand new. I guess that's what it is. Can a machine shop tell me if my head is warped at all?

yeah they can tell you. You can put a straight edge on it to get an idea of its warped. Did the car get really hot at all? Have you noticed any white smoke coming out of your Exhaust?

No white smoke that I could tell. And it did a good compression check. Also, my friend has a leak tester that you put on the thermostat housing, and said it was okay, but that was before I noticed this problem, I think I might have to check it again. I haven't really put the cars balls to the wall yet, so I can't imagine what would have made this happen. :thumbdown

yeah I would do the leak test again. On mine I was starting to get white smoke. when I pulled my head you could see where the HG was just starting to leak. What kind of HG do you have on yours? I had a cheap o on mine, it lasted for about 9,000 miles. I put an OEM one on it havent had any problems yet.

i am having the same problem. i just rebuilt my motor too. fluid will start to drian out of the overflow. it took 360 miles to start coming out of the overflow though. the machine shop put my motor together though?? i bought the topline engine kit and had the balance shaft removed is the topline head gasket crap??

Yeah, the balance shafts are removed off of my car too. I will put another thermostat on there. Why specifically can you not run a car without the thermostat from 1968 and on?

well what the sh*% i'm pissed i'm running stock boost i guess i have the wastegate restrictor taken out so what ever psi that is what its at.

do i do a compression test or some other test to see if its the head gasket????
