This in on Ebay for sale by a private party who claims it is a "Mitsubishi" evo 3 16G but it looks more like the knock offs sold there. Can anyone quickly identify this as a knock off or the real deal? Thanks.

Its not a Mitsu, but I don't think it is a knock off. I forgot the company that makes it with those comp covers. If I figure it out I will tell ya.:thumb:

A real MHI EVO III does not have those little plates.
It has the correct serial number.
Does not say EVO anywhere on it.

Notice the difference in the wastegate flapper arm. The real EvoIII has a flat flapper; the fake has a round, elbowed, flapper arm.

The EvoIII GT (or other knock-off name) is made in China, not by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It uses different metals in it's construction. Whether those metals are better or worse has yet to be decided.

There have been many cases of the GT version failing very quickly. Some people have good luck with them, others have horrible luck with them. As far as performance numbers go, for the people who've installed them, they report that it performs within the realm of the real EvoIII's expected performance.

In most cases, you can get the MHI turbo for only about $20 more than the GT clone at most vendors who carry both.

yea mines fake too then LOL but I paid 350 shipped for it brand new /w everything and year warrenty. So I dont think I got scammed too bad lets hope I have good luck with it :thumb:

In that case, I recommend keeping in touch with whomever you bought it from, checking the turbo for shaft play on a regular basis (once every two to three weeks shouldn't be too much to ask), and if it fails, document what conditions the turbo was in when it failed, how many miles you had put on it, how long it was on the car, etc., and make a thread or product review thread on it so that others can see your results.

If you keep an eye on the shaft play, you may be warned in advance of the turbo failing on you and you'll be able to plan ahead on what you need to do to keep your car running, i.e. buying a replacement/temporary turbo, second daily-driver car, etc.

Not sure if its related but a couple hours after I posted this thread the seller ended his auction early
