When replacing the driver's side axle on a 1g awd how does the front shaft come out of the long black thing with the bearing in it. Does it just slide in or does it have a ring or something that holds it in. Thanks.

It comes out with a prybar, there is a retainer ring in there, just pop it out. The "long black thing" is called an intermediate shaft, just FYI

Thanks. I couldn't remember what that was called for the life of me.

No I'm sitting at work right now. I just ordered one and wondered how it came out. Have it all out because I just rebuilt my engine and I am ordering the little odd's and ends crap I need to replace before my 1600 mile journey to Arizona.

Where is this retaining clip you are talking about???

Is in the carrier bearing? I have the axle completely off except for the end that goes into the carrier bearing and I can't see and clip in there. Do I have to take the seals out?

this is for transmission removal but they have instructions to remove cv-axles. its very simple if you just follow the instructions

http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html

Thanks but I have been staring at that for half an hour and it still doesn't tell me how to get the end of the axle out of the carrier bearing. The axle and joints itself are serarated from the part of the axle with the spline, just need to know how it comes out of the bearing.

The only thing holding the axle on is that clip. The FSM has you remove the metal seal in the drivers side CV cup and press the intermediate shaft out with a drift. Marty @ Raxles told me to hold the IM shaft in one hand with the axle hanging down and hit the CV cup with a deadblow hammer and rotate the whole thing to work them apart. That worked for me.

The CV cup on the drivers side is a female and the IM shaft has the clip on it.

I just did a clutch swap on my 1G AWD this weekend and I was able to get an old-fashioned crowbar in there and separated them with it. With the help of a really big screwdriver also. Really tight though.

Why would you pull the drivers side axle off the intermediate shaft for a clutch swap?
Are you talking about something different?

Steve

come to think of it, I guess I didnt have to. I could have just pulled the axle and intermediate together.
