I'm new to the DSM world, but not new to that of turbos. I do have a couple of questions about the 14b turbo if you guys wouldnt mind answering.

I am considering the purchase of a 1g Eagle Talon AWD from a buddy. He only wants $700 for the car. The catch is the previous owner removed the turbo to use on another talon. Supposedly this is the only thing the car needs with the exception of a little attention and maintenance. Now onto my questions.

What is the stock boost set at (psi - also is this wastegate controlled or is there a stock boost controller) and what type of flange does the 14b use? Does it have its own flange or is it something comparable to that of a T3? I have a T3 laying around and thought that if i bought the car, i could either get another manifold to use with the T3 or just settle for a stock 14b.

Any and all suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

First of since your new try using the search button all this info is on here already.

Now to your questions, stock boost is controlled by a Boost Control Solenoid and a T3 turbo will not bolt to the stock Mitsu manifold. You need to get a T3/T4 manifold or an adaptor plate. My suggestion would be just to get a 14b and put it on. If you upgrade to a T3/T4 you will need supporting mods, you can't just bolt it on and be ready to go.

Check this out for an upgrade path http://www.dsmtuner.com/tuning-guide/1gturbo

Thank you. I have been reading over the FAQ about DSMs for most of the morning and just couldnt seem to find the ansnwers i was looking for.

Now that i know that a stock boost controller is involved, what is stock set at?

Thanks again!

Stock 1g boost should be 11 psi, but anywhere from 8-11 is common. It depends on the ECU's control of the BCS and boost leaks.

If your car is going to be on stock conditions I will suggest you to buy a used 14B... That will be very cheap, easy to re-install it, and will give you fun when using a manual boost controller.

Stock boost on a 1G DSM is between 9-11.5Psi

Good Luck :thumb:

Wow, thanks for the quick replies!

I didnt think that the T3 would just "bolt right in" but i thought it would be worth asking. Looks like i am in the market for a 14b turbo. Hopefully that is all the car will need. I will find out more about the car tommorrow and decide whether or not i will buy it by the end of the week.

$700 for a decent talon doesnt seem like a bad deal at all to me :rocks:

Just found out today that the car has a "new" head (i am guessing he means rebuilt), new timing belt, and new motor mounts. Even better news is that he said he would take $600 for the car if i would come get it out of his way!

This is pretty exciting for me, considering this will be my first DSM. :thumb: :talon:

Do yourself a favor, perform a compression test before you buy. Make sure it doesn't become a money pit. ;)

That's a very good idea...

$600 bucks for a good conditions 1G DSM sounds very nice to be true OMG OMG
Hope you are so lucky... let us know! :thumb:

I went and looked at the car and found out a little more info.

The car actually jumped timing. The mechanic that the car is sitting at now said there was no damage to the pistons, but the valves were bent pretty good, so a "new" head was put on along with a new head gasket, motor mounts, timing belt, and a couple of other odds and ends. I didnt get a chance to do a compression test, as it was after the shop had closed when i went to look at the car and i didnt have a tester with me.

The mechanic assured me that this would definitely be a good buy and a fun project car. I want to hear your opinions on this one.

sounds good.. if they took care of the valves then there shouldn't be a problem, but i would still do a compression test.

let's just hope the mechanic was right and there was no piston damage... you wouldn't want any hot spots as those often cause knock and detonation...

forget using the stock boost seneloid...just get a cheap MBC and ur set...

That was my plan.

Also after speaking with the mechanic, he recommended that i get a 16g for the car. Of course along with an upgraded fuel pump, injectors, intake, and exhaust. He said that if i was going to go that route anyway, just do it in the beginning and save myself the time and money.

If you're going to do all the supporting mods why not just use the T3 you already have? I suppose it might be overkill though.

As for time and money, check out the classified for prices on a 14b. They tend to be cheap. It would be an easy investment to get it up and running. Upgrading later would be easy enough. I would also think it would be a good idea to make sure it's running well in a form as close to stock as possible, then upgrade.

That's a VERY good point. That sounds like a good route to take.

Actually this thread is helping me determine whether or not i should purchase this car and if i do, what route to take to get it running. ;)
