question about tools

I plan on picking up a 1g gsx around my area soon and I am getting it for very cheap but its gonna need some fixing up. Was just wondering what tools i need to pretty much take apart this car. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good set or had any suggestions on what tools i should get if I plan on fixing the car up and modding eventually.

Any set with a good variety of sockets and wrenches will work just fine. You'll need screw drivers, Flat head and Phillips. Basic tools really.

the car is pretty much all 10mm, 12mm and 14mm bolts. someone correct me if im wrong but when i installed a new smic all i needed was a philips head and a 10mm.

10, 12, 14, 17 and 19mm sockets and wrenches is pretty much everything you will need. Other than a 32mm for the axle nut. Those and a couple screwdrivers and some pliers is the basic stuff you would need.

10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 36mm socket with the appropriate drive

All of those in standard sockets, deep sockets, and gear wrenches.

Regular and stubby phillips and flathead.

Hammer

Slipjoint regular pliers and needle nose pliers

Spare bolts and fuses and wire connectors.

Spare qt of oil.

Spare coolant.

Just as ed1380 said hit up harbor freight..they got tools 2 fit your every need...i just picked up there 301 piece tool set 4 about $180 and I have to say they are amazing..those tools they help you with anything from doing a oil change to pulling your motor/tranny..etc highly recommend it

On the above list, NEGATiVE on ANY crescent wrenches. They are good for rounding off your bolts only!! My current car was an empty shell, never needed a crescent wrench for the entire build.

Get a timing tool kit from one of the vendors makes the job alot easier. A bake caliper compressor tool for the rear calipers. Also a pocketlogger setup.

Add a compression tester? A good one that can also connect to a compressor for leak testing and valve work.

Spark plug gap tool.

On the multi meter a digital one works for most tests. An analog one is needed for some special tests like reading the ODB codes with out a code reader.

Get a copy of a service manual, either a factory one or an aftermarket.

A hand vacuum pump. Make your own or get break bleed setup to use with the vacuum pump.

Digital camera to take pictures before you take things apart.
To mark things and hold them together while apart: Blue Masking tape, marker, ziplock or similar bags, plastic ties. Mechanics wire

Pop rivet and threaded insert tool.

Yeah but unless you have a harbor freight store, you will have to mail it back and it will take a few weeks for replacements.

Plus, craftsmen lazer cut sockets are about the closest fitting socket I have ever used other than snapon. I would say the Lowe's brand (Kobalt) is good too. Very durable, nearly as good build quality as craftsmen. But, lowe's will not switch out broken ones in store, you need to mail them off too.

My most used tools :

10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, You will want sockets and wrenchs for these sizes
15/16th or 25mm (Tranny Drain plug). Wrench
32mm Socket/Wrench for axle nuts
Slip Joint, and Needle Nose Pliers

Screw Drivers
Timing Belt Tool set.
3-4 Foot section of steel pipe that will fit over your biggest ratchet
1-1.5 foot section of steel pipe
Brass Hammer, Rubber Mallet.
Compression Tester Boost Leak tester
Spark Plug Gap Tool

I use my jack handle for the above. It splits into 2 sections. I actually cut the end off it because I had no need for a 4 foot jack handle.

Ratcheting wrenches are sooo nice to have.

I can fit just about all the necessary tools that I need in a small (12X6X6in) tool box (cept a breaker bar). I used to carry it with me in the car. It has saved my A** quite a few times.

A couple more handy tools to have are boost leak tester, compression tester, leak down tester, repair manual, and a volt meter or dvom. A lot of people here will ask if you have done a comp test, boost leak test, or leak down. Really handy stuff to have
