Hey guys,

I have a DSMLink package that i bought from ffwdconnection. I was recently screwed by the guy who I sold my car to, and without going into detail basically he left me with the same dsmlink package i received from ffwdconnection without the eprom or 2g ECU. <- (most valuable parts right) anyway, so now i have the connector, the cable and the cd. wondering if that's even worth anything. And if not, would the connector for the 2g also work for the 1g? or would i have to purchase another dsmlink package? thanks guys

- Jose

2Gs are OBDII, so the connector/cable will not work for a 1G. Although if you read the DSMLink website, it looks like they don't even sell a 2G connector/cable due to piracy concerns. Try contacting the DSMLink guys and see if they can do something for you.

Well see that's the thing. I essentially have the MAIN PART of the kit. which is the cable and the software. problem is i don't have the chip that comes with the settings you can specify. Now what i want to do is to try and sell this thing as a complete kit as i need a 1g kit. So there lies my problem. Where can i get a chip or what is a reasonable price for me to sell the cable and software without the chip.

You should be able to sell that for pretty close to what you'd buy it for new. The EPROM is something that doesn't come with DSMlink anyway, so that shouldn't really be accounted for when selling. And the adapter (that plugs into your OBDII port) is what's worth the money. You can buy the cable anywhere and you can download the software for free from their site. But when you buy the kit, you're basically buying that adapter, and the fact that they won't replace it if you lose it, makes it that valuable. I would sell it for pretty close to the asking price for DSMlink from a vendor, but not that high since there's no chip. But that's something you can go though DSMlink and get for pretty cheap separately.

according to the dsmlink web site there is an eprom chip in the computer that has a number listed right next to the dsmlink tag on the chip.. you can call them all you want but they will not help you with out the number from the chip.... sounds like your stuck with buying the link all over..... dont buy it from anywhere besides dsmlink though or you will get no support at all from them... they have had major problems with people selling fake copys. and im sure you'll have no problem getting rid of the parts, actually if you have the adaptor for a 2g I'd be willing to buy it from you if the price is right.

Perhaps you misspoke. While the cable is the key, it's only the key because it's hard to reproduce just like the daughter board on the 1G version. The EPROM does come with DSMLink as part of the package. The software inside the EPROM is what your buying but because of how easy it is to copy it they make the cable the key. The client software is free, the code for the ECU isn't.

Yes, I did misspeak. I meant to say the ECU doesn't come with the package.

Ok, thanks for the comments guys it really answers a lot. To put things into perspective I have the 2 most important parts the cable and the obd2 connector. As for the eprom or chip i have heard something about dsmchips.com or some other website that sells eproms correct? if not where can i get an eprom chip? lastly, i've had offers which i personally think is ridiculous for the "most important parts" of the whole kit. some guy has offered me 50 dollars shipped for the cable and the connector, while another fellow has informed me that although the price of the cable use to sell for that much back when dsmlink sold separate cables. Now it's a rare commodity and I believe is worth more. The question is how much do you guys think is a fair price for the dsmlink pacakage without the eprom?

In that regard I misspoke. When I refered to the cable I really mean the DSMLink OBD II interface. The cable between it and the PC is just a standard serial cable.

So you have the key and if you still have the box that DSMLink came in you have the serial number for the EPROM. You won't be able to buy the EPROM from anyone else. The code inside the chip is DSMLink. You may be able to get a replacement for the chip from ECMTuning.

I agree with Steve...

The CD is basically worthless because its available online... The cable is worthless because you can pick them up at COMP USA for 10 bucks... The OBD II connector is worth $45-$65. The EPROM chip IS DSMLINK. This is where all the magic happens the adapter just opens it up. If you had the chip I would say the package is worth 400-450, without it I would be surprised if you got 70 bux for everything.

We are not talking about a garden variety OBD II adapter and that 's why it has value.

To a guy that has had his stolen it's worth quite a bit since the only option is a new package. To the thief who bootlegged a copy of the EPROM it's the difference between a working and nonworking setup.

So the value of the adapter is somewhere between the cost of that generic one and a new copy of DSMLink, how much exactly depends on buyer. I'm pretty sure it's more than $50 to $70.

This is true... though I remember seeing an article or write-up or something on how to make a DSMLINK adapter out of a normal ISO OBD cable.

This is why its not worth as much anymore. The only people that would want to buy this are either to lazy to make the cable themselves or don't have the knowhow.

I'd like to see that if you find a link. I'm aware that people hacked a cable for V1 but I'm not aware of anything for V2. I know that's it's possible if your willing to work at it. The skill set is above what most people have and those that could likely depend on IP protection for their livelihood as well.

According to that post he ordered two chips when getting DSMLINK. They wont send him a new chip just cause he asked. Basically hes SOL I am almost 100% sure ECM tuning will say tough shit try emailing them for another chip...
