I was reading a little about it on the DSM link website, and it says that this program is not for the beginning tuner.... which is me. I was really considering getting it before i read that. They also said with a little mistake you could distroy the motor. Did any of you guys get it as a beginner and do alright with it? How much time did it take you to fully understand all of its possibilities? Thanks!

Well, you kinda go from controlling nothing in computer to controlling almost everything. I would start off getting used to logging runs and learning how fuel curves and timing curves work. I wouldn't just jump into DSMLink, there are alot of things to learn first.

Its true, a small mistake can destroy your motor...but isn't that true with anything?

Just don't get in and start making crazy changes without understanding what you are doing. I have never used anything else to tune my car. I went straight from a DSMchip compensating for my 550's to DSMlink and have never looked back. I still haven't tuned much, mostly from time constraints but I'm also waiting to get a wideband before I get real serious.

So DSM link is a good investment, but if i did get it i would have to log my runs, and study them? If i did that, what would i compare them to, and where could i go to learn about all this stuff?

The DSMLink website has a whole forum section dedicated to all sorts of tuning questions and how to use DSMLink. It is a very good investment, just be careful with it. I would log some runs with it and go over them and make sure it isn't leaning out really bad, then if you are just learning I'd keep the fuel trims a tad on the rich side so nothing goes wrong. Then just take it at your own pace. Just keep a careful eye out for the signs of detonation and tune away :thumb:

Dsmlink is a GREAT investment. Like Syndicate13 said, as long as you don't start changing things that you don't understand, you should be ok. By reading stuff online both here and on the dsmlink forums if you buy it and reading the dsmlink tuning guide, it will give you a pretty good idea of what you are doing.
I'm not totally sure what you question is, but my advise would be NOT to buy some other tuning devise just because you are afraid of how 'complex' dsmlink is. Just use the parts of it that you understand until you understand the rest of it.
I say if you want it, go for it. Just be careful with what you adjust. Like many others who have bought it, I feel it is the best 'mod' I have ever bought.

If you leave it completely alone, and who would, your car will run exactly like it does now. It will come setup for whatever size injectors you have. It is extremely easy to understand because you have so much information right at your fingertips. No more guessing if you're knocking by lookinf for timing irregularities, just log knock and see if there is any. You'll know exactly where it is and can then go to that RPM range in the fuel dialog and add a little where it's needed. Log again and tune from there. :thumb:

I never tuned anything in my life before dsmlink. It's really easy to learn and the dsmlink forums that you get access to are invaluable. Get it. :thumb:
