Pulling the engine out

Is it possible to pull out the engine without taking out the transmission? or should I just take out the engine and transmission as a whole. I already have the engine crane and plan to do this soon. Thanks. :thumb:

I used to always drop the trans out the bottom and pull the engine out the top. Then I hept reading about everyone else doing it with the trans on yet so tried it that way. It takes a little more time to get it twisted in the right direction and is always a good idea to have someone watching to make sure you dont hit anything. However I find it alot easier to spend the time pulling the engine and trans out the top on an angle then messing around under the car trying to get the trans back up in.
 
Here's a list of the possible ways that I could think of:

1. Pull tranny out from underneath and lift the engine out from the top
2. Leave tranny in the engine bay w/ CV shafts still installed. support tranny with a board and a jack or jackstand. Then lift the engine out.
3. Pull one piece out at a time (ei. tranny, head, manifolds and accessories, and block) (no cherry picker)
4. Leave engine and tranny bolted together and lift straight out.


I have personally used each of these methods at least once. #1 was moderately easy. #2 sucked - I'll never do it again. #3 wasn't as bad as it sounds. Obviously it is a last resort only. #4 is the best way to do it IMO. It was quick, easy, and problem free.

Regarding #4, just drop the center diff/driveshaft and pull the half shafts and lift the engine and tranny out still connected. It does come out together fairly easy. It just needs to be tilted at an angle with the front cover up and the tranny down. Transdapt makes a pretty nifty tool called the "Engine Tilter" which is used in conjunction with a cherry picker, and it makes the process much easier.

#2 and #4 is what I was thinking about. If it's possible I would want to do #2, how hard is it to unbolt the trans from the engine with it still in the car? Thanks.

Like I said, I would avoid method #2 at all costs. It's a PITA trying to pull the trans aways from the block enough to clear the input shaft. And the whole time, you're balancing the tranny. I have never done it on an AWD, just a FWD. I refuse to use that method ever again.

I would recommend method #4. It's the quickest and easiest. Why are you so hellbent on leaving the tranny in the car when pulling the engine?
 
I would have to take off the driveshafts and shift linkages if I take out the trans with the engine tho, so I'm not sure if I want to do the extra work. But if it's really that hard to seperate the engine and the trans, I might just take them out as one piece.

Believe Me. He knows what he is talking about. They made these engines like they were ment to come out with the tranny attached. It is the most time saving way. Unbolting what needs to come off for the tranny to go with it is nothing compared to the time you are going to waste trying to squeeze it all back in and get it to line up right.

That's a good point, I haven't thought about how hard it would be to line it back up when I put the engine back in. Looks like I'll have to pull it as one piece.

Laying under the car trying to shove a trans back up against the engine is alot harder to do then pulling the driveshafts and shift linkage
