Im going to be pulling the engine in my 96 tsi awd here soon. Is it possible to pull the engine and leave the tranny and transfer case in or pull the transfer case then tranny then the engine? Ive only done fwds so just seeing what would be the easiest way. Thanks.

Personally, I just dropped the T-case and pulled the motor and transmission together. I had it up on jack stands pretty high to make it easy to maneuver the tranny down and left when swinging the motor up. It was fairly painless this way, and I just separated the motor and transmission out of the car.

I agree with what has been said already. I just got done pulling the engine and tranny out of my 95gsx and I kept them attached.

well i never pulled an awd motor. but everytime ive pulled a motor ive pulled the engine out only. this way i have less to do later and i can put it right on the stand. ive dont this on my first dsm and on my s2000. just my two cents. hope all goes well with the rebuild

With a GSX, there's just no room to wiggle the transmission away from the motor without doing 95% of what you have to do to remove it as one unit. If it is pulled separate, you wind up having to rig up support and skids for the transmission so you can get the motor back in. Every time I have had to yank the motor out of my current 95 GSX or a Superboob AWD, it is easiest to deal with the drivetrain as a single unit during removal. It makes reassembly 100x easier too. Doing the shaft alignment in the engine bay is a supreme pain in the ass.

Like stated above.. remove the tcase and pull the engine/tranny at the same time.. it will save u a huge headache.

Ok i really appreciate the fast resposes. Thats for everybodys 2 cents. I will take all of this into account on my rebuild. I will let you all know how it goes. I trust your guys judgement.

as long as you take off all the pulleys you will have enough room to pull the trans too just take the transfer case and axles off first . if when you drop it back in you have all the pulleys on just throw the trans back in from the bottom.

Takes me less than 1 hour to pull everything in 1 piece, it's much easier this way.

1 hour? Are you serious. I could do that with my fwd. I dont think i could with my awd. But ive never done an awd engine pull either. After doing it a couple times i think i could. But hopefully i wont have to since im going with name brand high quality parts.

Even with an AWD, it doesn't take very long if you have it up high on some good jackstands and don't screw around. I have pneumatic tools though, so I can haul ass getting the motor loose. The part I always have the most problems with is popping the front drive shafts loose. If you get it up high on some 3 ton stands and have a good cv prybar, it tends to be a little easier. It is also helpful to be so familar with where all the hoses and wires go, you can just pop everything off and not worry about getting anything mixed up. I know the layout of my engine as well as the layout of my house. I just lay everything off to the sides and unbolt it.

Another tip I would recommend is removing your hood. You'll get pissed at it after you smack your head on it 20 or 30 times during the lift.

Everybody is right on here do it as 1 unit and taking the hood off is a great tip as well. I just did it a couple months ago and I went up through the top (I have an automatic) and had to tip it at a really steep angle to get it out and it was a pain. I don't know if it's easier to go out the bottom, maybe someone on here can chime in on that. As well as going back in through the top or bottom. Hope it helps.:thumb:

If you had a car lift, out the bottom to a stand might be easier, but as far as most people are equipped, out the top is best. I use a chain fall and a second come-along to angle it out. The automatic may be a bit longer due to the torque converter, and that'd make it have to tilt more to clear the left side. Just take all the accessory pulleys off and that'll give you a couple inches on the right, chain the tranny separately so you can make it tilt, and pull straight up until the bottom of the timing cover clears the ABS stuff and the shock tower. Then, pull up and to the right with the transmission pushed/pulled downward and swing it out over the right fender a little, and you should be able to pull it clear to the front of the car then.

Load leveler. Why struggle when you can spend like $50 for a tool that will let you tilt an engine with little effort without scratching up your engine bay and generally tearing shit up?

Never used one.... I have always redneck engineered some contraption of chain and cable that would look at home in a torture chamber.

If you went into an autoparts store, is that specifically what you'd ask for? A load leveller?

I'm going to have to go buy one if it'll prevent me from having to recreate an midevil torture device in my garage. There's too many holes in the rafters for chain as it is.
