Heres a couple links to help you. I was going to go with a pte turbo but decided against it. I went with a hx40. The relaibility isnt really good with them. The bb ones could be different but just trying to share information I know. Hope this helps.

Ball bearing turbos have no thrust system, so the above threads are useless to the O.P.

two completely different designs and concepts of absorbing the thriust load.. the angular ball bearings handle thrust in both directions. I have a PTE ball bearing 67m turbo holding up great..probably near 5500-6k miles if not 6500 of high boost on it and no issues.. i do hate their restrictors though

It seems to be a hit and miss thing. Ive had my buddy got a bb pte and it went bad a year after he got it. He called pte and he said there service is crappy. Ive had no first hand experience but just passing info that I heard and was told. Sorry for passing false info.

Yea, they are cocky, give very short answers most times and NOTHING is ever their fault except once in the great new moon they will just fix something and call it assembly error (at least lately the more i call and i don't say who i am and neither do my friends unles we are calling for warranty) but they have been dicks lately

On BB turbos, if you have the resources (an account and catalogue) i've found that by measuring the turbos' bearings you can find replacements aside from themanufacturer (except their special cartridges) but a good machinist can make these if they wear out.. most times the balls wear though from what i've seen of bearings in general, so a new set of balls and a new cage and you can in fact rebuild a ball bearing turbo.. the subaru ones i played with the most and some old nissan BB t25/28's AND you can often order balls that are .010 over thesize in a worn ball bearing race and rebuild it just like you can with turbo journal bearings

angular contact bearings are nothing special really, they've just don'e some special mods to the housing to make it accept them.. theres people in auusttrailia (weird how they seem to innovate everything from engine management to BB turbo conversions in motorsports) but there's shops that will convert anything to ball bearing and others who make their own ball bearing chra's from aluminum and other materials and use manufactured wheels from other companies like garrett, BW and more.

Ball bearing turbos are actually quite simple, keep them fed with clean and IMO synthetic oils and they'll live a long time.. start going 5k miles between oil changes and using crap filters and well, they won't last at all...they can be costly to rebuild or cheap to rebuild deending on what breaks/gets worn in them but i've been studying the hell out of them for a few months and thye're nothing special/top secret or aythign like that..any machinist worth his weight in oatmeal could make/convert one, it's just ordering the right races and class of bearing balls to hold up to the RPM's and heat they're exposed to but VXB can hook you up! that's my best and these days only source for BB's

I agree i don't think they're worth what the companies are charging extra for them..something extra yea... 400+ extra = NO!

That's no shit.

Had to send a customer turbo there because they did something to the shaft that made it specific to them, and they won't sell parts to individuals. There was a "step" in the shaft where the turbine-side journal bearing goes and standard T3 rebuild parts wouldn't work.

I get a price quote over the phone- $185. Not bad. The turbo was already disassembled and fully-cleaned by me because I had anticipated buying the parts from them and doing the work for my customer myself.

I ship the turbo off to them- they claim the backplate was damaged and needed replacement, which was bullshit. I had the thing totally ripped apart- there was no damage to the backplate from the compressor seal collar. Then they came up with some bullshit that they didn't know the turbo was a big-shaft model even though I told them what turbo it was when I got the initial quote. Ended up the $185 rebuild cost my customer $360 thanks to their up-sales, and they charged me for shipping even though I included a prepaid UPS label in the box for return shipping. Horrible customer service.

I got the last laugh- after I called and bitched up a storm about them charging me for shipping and got them to take it off the bill, I voided the UPS label and got that credited to my account so I basically got it shipped back to me for free. LOL

Really have been hearing some crap things about both Garrett and PTE lately. I have always noticed that PTE's like to spit oil seals rather easily. I have had good luck with garrett but that was in the past, supposedly they are now going Chinese like PTE. Look into a borg or something like that, you know its made here in the states and there is the customer service to back them!

Thanks for the input guys. I understand everyone has different preferences on turbos they'd use. Whether from personal experience or clients. But as for me I'm only interested in BBs. And really interested in the PTE 5862cea and what people have heard of it.

Badass extremely underrated turbo, especially on this site. (not surprised)

My friend has a 5858 on his auto and put down over 500whp DJ at 35psi, with BC 272s and stock intake manifold and ebay FMIC. Easily a 600whp DJ turbo on a 5 spd.

Street car this is perfect with response and top end.
