ok guys my buddy just bought a 97 eclipse gst spyder.. the car is completly stock..the other day he asked me to test drive his car because he's having problems with his second gear....the car drives good on first gear, when i go to shift for second it wont go in even with the clutch all the way in..it will shift into second sometimes but it will spit it out after a couple of seconds..what could this be? does he need a new trani? it also grinds like hell when u try to shift to second and it doesn't go in..
any help would be greatly apreciate it .

that could be the tranny itself, or the gear synchros. If the car pops out of gear in 2nd and it is in gear, there is porbably a chip in a tooth or lacking a tooth on a gear that would keep it in place. try holding it in hear all the way through 2nd. The grinding that your getting is this force on the tranny. I have some problems with mine most of the time. If you double clutch into 2nd (if you know how) that takes care of it. sounds kind of stupid, but i works on my car, my buds 90 TSi and cars that i have test driven.
Might want to get the synchros and tranny looked at by a respectable tech. i dont mess with that stuff. good luck man.

Yeah, try double clutching. I had the same problem with shifting into 5th gear in my car. I could never put in 5th, it would just grind all the time, but double clutching solved the problem.

if your in first, push in the clutch, pull the stick to neutral, let the clutch out, push in the clutch again, put it in second, let the clutch out.

Well you could also try changing the transmission gear oil to Synchromesh, it makes shifting easier.

Also you could try adjusting the clutch engagement, making sure the clutch is disengaging completely when you push it to the floor.

I have the same problem in my first and reverse gears. I changed my tranyn fluid, adn it helped immediatly.
I'd suggest doing that, and also getting your sychros checked.

What's the benefit?

If the the engine speed, and drive train speed is matched perfectly then no work for the syncro to do, or very little of it. Thats what you had to do back in the old days! ROFL Just matching the engine speed to the gear speed. I tap the gas though when I'm in neutral though...
