Precision PTE Turbo Issues - Blown, Smoking [Merged]

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Dave bolted a brand new Turbonetics 60-1 on and drove from his place to mine (about 1-1/2 hour drive) and by the time he got here the compressor wheel was hitting the housing and the turbo was chugging smoke.

I don't know how some of these manufacturers can get away with building such garbage and charging the price that they do. There are literally $130 Chinese eBay turbos out there that are more reliable these days.

Sounds about right, my SCM6152e did the same exact thing right at 5K miles, no more PTE for me:notgood:

I didn't install the turbo, kid before me did. I wanna say there is one, but that's just an educated guess. It sucks because I didn't even want this turbo anymore. I was going to remove it next week and sell it. Need money for coilovers and a Holset. SCREW YOU PTE.

I wonder what exactly happened. I have seen quite a few older pte's floating around from time to time that are in great shape, and get passed from car to car. The newer turbo's are just not lasting at all.

I know how the internet works with failed parts. The voices of complainers are what you hear, not the satisfied customers. But damn, there have been a ton of people having problems.

Thats the kind of outlook I used to have as well...I never thought it would happen to me, especially so suddenly. I thought turbo's kind of died a slow death, not a gunshot wound to the back of the head. In the past month i literally have never boosted it past maybe 15 lbs. I NEVER even get into boost when I drive because I like to save gas.

i cant realy say i am surprised. I have bought 4 pte turbos in my time and it seems to be hit or miss. First 2 i bought(scm6152) over 5 years ago (1 for me and 1 for a friend) Both those turbos have seen over 70000kms of 22 psi and have had absolutely zero problems.

Changed cars and bought another scm6152 and that one died in 10000kms then bought a new scm6262 and that one died in 5kms, Yes 5 freakin kms and i was livid and since then i hate those P.O.S. i would never ever buy another one. Since then i bought garret gt40 and didnt change a thing and its been awesome since.

I would much rather buy an ebay turbo over a PTE (although I will never buy either). I've had 2 PTE's and each had to be rebuilt si I sent each back to the manufacturer one came back and the wheels would barely spin, and the other died after a few hundred miles.

Yup, I had to drive my car with a blown turbo....hopefully the wheels are fine. I guess I will find out when I take it off next weekend. Car is now hibernating in storage

My 5031 didn't even make it 1000 miles before it was toasted. I had it rebuilt locally at a shop called Performance Techniques with actual Garrett parts and so far it has been taking a lot of abuse in Sam from RREs car. I moved on to a Holset though I was so pissed at it.

Pretty much as it came from PTE is was complete crap. I spent another $300 getting it built properly and it works now. It would have been nice if it came that way in the first place. And that stupid steel thrust bearing PTE uses instead of a bronze one is about the dumbest idea ever.

Mine was sourced from the OFH with the FP filter in-line (0.100" restrictor). I also monitored the pressure with my Zeitronix system and at anything above 1500 RPM it never saw less than 30psi and never more than 70psi so it should have been fine. At idle it had about 20psi.

Shit, that's terrible news since I have about 1500km on my pte 5457 50 trim. No sign of play and boosts like the day I installed it. Then again any day it could just explode in my face at any given moment.

Pte has terrible customer service also, rude and give you half ass answers. I'm gonna hope for the best and keep this turbo till it dies on me. Looking for 25psi see how long it'll last.

Sucks to hear about your turbo issue, I've had this PTE 6152S for 40k now and I'm currently running 28psi daily. OFH with a -3 line but the Mitsu crowd seems to have the worst luck with PTE, not sure why.

Holset in the works over here. And kmj 4g63t, thats exactly what i was thinking. Then it exploded in my face.

Are you sure, the thrust bearing is steel on steel?
I never did think PTE had much for real engineering going on, but that is really stupid.
Hate to say it, but the FP evo Black and evo Red turbos also use steel on steel thrust bearings. That is what most of the flap is about, where they tell you what motor oils you can use. Pages and pages about this in evom. 57 pages to be exact:

because honda guys put gt30r sized turbos on 1.6L and then run 7 psi. Obviously I'm over exadurating, but I think there are very few crowds besides mitsu guys and supra guys who push turbos as hard as we do. I know I pushed 21psi on my competely stock 1g when I first got it, out of ignorance, but it was fast.

Yeah it was steel, I still have it somewhere around here in a box of blown up parts. When the turbo got rebuilt a bronze one was used and so far it has been smooth sailing.
