I recently installed a punishment racing fmic and love it, but I would like to step up my game a little. I would like to run a gm maf, get rid of the stock maf, and vent to atmosphere. I have a couple questions though. Can I run a gm maf with just dsmlink or do i have to have a translator? Has anyone incorporated a gm maf setup into a pr fmic kit? How much is the needed supplies (gm maf, custom piping...) going to cost me? I love to tune with link and if I dont need a translator it would seem to be quite affordable. thanks for the help.

yes... ECMTuning makes a cable to plug right into your dsmlink'ed ecu!!

Heres the link:

ECMTuning, Inc.

As for the IC Piping and fitting the MAF to it.... it should be hard at all to fab. something up!!
just get the couplers for the MAF and size out the lenght of that put together and cut the right size out the piping! Fast and Easy way to do it!! :/ haha

If you have V3 of link you can connect directly with the GM MAF cable they sell and not need the translator. All you'll need to do is get reducer couplers for 3" or what ever size of GM MAF you run and the size of your hard piping. Cut out the section and it is recomended to bead it. Are you venting just for sound or what is your reason? Recirculating allows you keep your turbo spool up higher between shifts which is why most people keep it recirculated.

Also, the stock MAF is rated solid to 400hp after that it becomes a restriction.

Edit: If your mod list is up to date, I'd recomend getting fuel support first before trying to vent. Power & reliability>astethics

yea mod list is out of date, I will fix that. I already have a 255fp and an afpr with 560cc injectors (small I know but they were free!). I am trying to go gm maf mainly for looks (not sound). I like the way the engine bay looks once you get a gm maf and get rid of the black tumor that is stock. Before I get flamed just save it, I am into performance too, but I like my engine bay clean. I guess I am just afraid to start modifying my intercooler piping because I dont know if I could replace it if I mess it up too bad. Oh well you never know if you dont try. Still looking for someone with the modified pr fmic kit ...?

Venting isn't worth it. All you are paying for is sound.

Thanks but I didnt really ask for your opinion on whether you liked my idea or not. I am looking for people that have done this with this fmic or at least have some nice tips for me to do it. Plus its my money, so who really cares LOL?

Dsmlink v2 = You need a translator.
Ecmlink v3 = Plug it in with their cable and go!

BUT if you have v3, why not just go speed density?

+1 forgot about SD which is not only cheaper but cleaner too which is what you are looking for. Also, all IC pipes are the same just cut and clamp. Want to get rid of it, add a straight coupler.

Well my hardware is v2.5, but my software is v3, but I guess I would still need to upgrade. Well What is a ballpark for a speed density setup assuming I had v3?

i had the pr fmic on my 92 gsx with a 3" gm maf and it was very simple to install and improved spool quite a bit. thomas says in his write-up on ecmtuning that they did all the testing on their cars with the gm maf about 6" from the throttle body, so i just measured about 6" out and put the center of the sensor right there. measure up and down the tubing the distance you need and mark it. then you can cut it yourself or take it to the shop. i still have the 3" maf and couplers. if you are interested in buying them pm me. also the only hardware difference between v2 and v3 is the gm maf adapter. i have one for a 1g i'll sell also if you know what 2 wires to swap it will work perfectly in your car.

Yes the only way to use speed density is to upgrade your hardware to v3.
ECMTuning, Inc.
Upgrade is $175 plus around $10 for shipping, plus shipping on your end. Either way it's cheaper than a $200 maf translator and $50 maf.

Well after the upgrade I still need to buy the IAT and MAP sensors right? I have found a maf, translator and couplers for $175, so I could just go with that right? I am only on a 16g, so no crazy boost or hp here, just looking for a clean and simple looking engine bay but with good functionality.

I picked up my ait from ebay for $60, but summit sells them for $20 plus $5 for the bung.
Map sensor, for a 16g you can run a 3bar (forgot the math but it's good up to 28psi IIRC) for around $40-$60
SD is the way to go. I was going to do a gm maf but I hear when the weather changes the cars act strange. Plus this would look very clean. My map sensor is against the firewall under the intake manifold so you can't see it. The ait will be on the bottom of the uicp so you can't see that either. Plus you will need someone that can tig weld the bung in there for you. Or if you haven't gotten the punshiment kit see if Tim will weld in a bung for you, that will save you some trouble.

Yea I already have the kit installed. So it looks like the SD route will be about $275 (v3 upgrade, sensors, and tig welding) and the GM MAF will be $175 (used translator, maf and couplers). Alright I guess it depends how much I sell my rods and pistons for. SD would be cleaner, but GM MAF is cheaper. Anyways thanks guys I now feel a lot more informed. Also if anyone has pics of a 2g with the gm maf and pr fmic please post!!!

You will have to cut your pipes and buy reducer couplers for your gm maf as well. The more crap you buy the closer you are to SD. LOL

Nah I can get the couplers and everything with the maf and maft for $175. But yea maybe I will go SD. Depends on how my garage cleanout goes. Anyway thanks for all the good info.
