Possible coolant issue

Took out my car for a ride and everything seemed fine. After about 5-10 minutes I noticed white smoke from the hood, so I parked and checked it out. I noticed the coolant in the reservoir looked to be boiling. I was told it could just be the radiator cap or the head gasket. Anybody have any ideas on what the issue could be?

Could be radiator, head gasket, or thermostat. What coolant mix are you running? Are your fans turning on?

Check fans and also see if your cap is working properly and if they are do a leak down and see If hg is holding pressure.

Could also be the sensor that kicks on your radiator fan, the fan motor itself, or a radiator fan relay, possibly a short in the wiring, check to see if the fan turns on after you let the car worm up.

do a compression test and see if the numbers look right, if they look low you most likely got a blown head gasket.

id recommend that you do a compression test to know what condition the motor is in currently.

it wouldn't be a bad idea to check the radiator cap gasket for leaks or wear.
also check all the radiator hose's, and all the hose clamps, make sure they are tight and not leaking.
check the condition of the coolant, inspect the water pump for leaks. and don't forget the the hard coolant pipe in front of the motor.
hopefully you didn't warp the head or anything.

There may be a hairline crack somewhere in the system which isn't allowing it to build pressure. If you pressurize the system, the fluid can go past its normal boiling point without boiling which leads me to believe your system cannot hold pressure.
