So I am thinking of upgrading my turbo from my 14b swap to a 16g big or evo 3 16g, ive herd alot of people talking about porting so i was woundering what does porting do and how does it help if it helps at all?

Porting can be very beneficial if done right. It allows you to flow more air and with less restriction. However most people fail when porting because they create high and low spots which cause air turbulance. So if you take some time and make the area you ported level and a smooth it will help you pick up a few more free HP.

higher rpm? like redline or 5-7k full boost?

Your efficiency range really has nothing to do with boost, Its just where the turbo is happier making power. Say you never really pound on your car, then just go with a small 16g so you have a nice solid mid range. you would be happy with either of them to be honest.

porting does help your car breath it will also helpl with your turbo spooling. but is something you shuld leave to the pros uless u have a spare head laying around then try your self and learn. I will be porting my head in a month or 2.

The OP is asking about porting a turbo not a head.

porting out the collector on the end of the manifold and the begin of the turbo dont help with spool, i thought, due to the fact it has a larger area that the exhaust gas has to flow through! Meaning it will push more of the exhaust at a lower velocity, in turn reducing the speed of the turbine spinning(spool)!
NOW porting the outlet of the turbo and the o2 housing greatly increase spool because there is no restriction of the exhaust trying to get through the turbine housing!

This is what i always assumed, not saying you shouldn't port out the mani and collectors because smoothing the walls out will help with restrictions, but inless you pushing alot of power you will see minimal increase in performance or spool!! IMO

Big 16g will be more at home with higher RPM and small 16g is more at home at midrange RPM. Their efficiency rates are almost identical but the big 16g does flow a bit more air.

I'm not so sure about that. with the evo 3 I peak 25psi at 3k rpm, and it holds till I shift at 7k.

well thats why the call it a port and polish job. You port the intake side of your engine, make it flow more air with bigger holes, and you polish your exhaust side of your engine, make it smoother. when you smooth out the exhaust side of your engine the gases have more velocity spooling the turbo faster. porting the exhaust manifold can be a good and bad idea. if you have a stock manifold with a big turbo it will help out alot, but if you have an aftermarket manifold with a small almost stock turbo it may help spool it a little faster but it may get to the point where boost will drop off at high rpms

i have the e316g and i hit 20psi by 3500rpm from a roll, i can build full boost in 1-2 by 27xxrpms .... its all about how you drive the car. if you do alot of launching and traffic light stuff, then u might be a little disappointed, do alot of rolling like i do and youll love it
