Ok, so after a few conversations with a couple members i've decided to embark on my very first transmission job. Ive done exhaust, head gaskets, suspensions, axles, brakes, but never repaired or worked on a trans before.
BUT! after reading through some tech posts and watching a few videos it seems that removing and\or replacing most parts on the trans and drive-train isnt all that hard with the correct instruction.
And this site is full of post and people with plenty instruction. So wish me luck and leave me tips.
It just seems wrong to pay someone $70-80 hr in labor for something people are doing in their driveways and parking lots.
I'll make sure i take pictures and try my best to document my learning and post to try to help people like me in the future.

Not really. What comes out of that shop price is: insurances, lawyer and accountant fees, mortage payments, payroll for labor, other hired help (and payroll taxes) and finally the owner's cut.

The advantage with paying this price is that the personnel doing the work are professionally trained in tranny repairs .. and the finished work has a written guarantee behind it for a limited period of time.

Some kid doing the same in their garage are at their own risk - if it works, good for them, and if not ... SOL!!

Well good luck man itll be a learning experience. There is definetly alot of instructions on how to do things to your transmission on this site. Remember there are also other resources you can use, most will not be your exact transmission but its the same basic concept. Just take your time and do it right the first time, also make sure you keep the transmission very clean while it is apart. What exactly are your plans for the transmission?

Good luck. Take your time and be patient.

I highly recommend a set of lisle lock ring pliers. If you have an old clutch disk cut out the center section and weld it to a cheap axle socket. Easy way to hold the input shaft when you have to retorque the end nuts. Did you look at their torque value yet? Lots o fun.

And make sure you label your nuts and bolts since this is your first time. Saves a ton of hassle.

What do you mean by welding a clutch disc to the socket? You are talking about the big 3x mm axle socket right? I've always left the flywheel inspection plate off till near the end and when I have to torque down those axle nuts I wedge a prybar between the floor and the teeth on the flywheel,

Most of the bolts you'll be able to put back in the place they came out of but if you're going to spread this out over a few days it definitely helps to label. I always find it's easiest to do something if I take it apart and put it back together that same day while my memory's fresh.

Maybe a few of you took my post wrong, at this moment i have absolutely no intentions of doing a full rebuild. If it came to that i would buy a built tranny and install.
I'm hoping theres nothing wrong internally that has to be repair, i will be paying for a professional job.
I do plan on the basics (whats seems like basics on here), t-case removal and rebuild, replacing solenoids, shift kit, output shaft, end clutch kit, torque converter, and any other misc, part i can replace with reasonable ease and cost.

It's not as bad as it seems at first. I just recently tore mine apart and put it back together for the first time.
