So heres my problem Ive been having and cant figure out the reason why. When I go out for a drive I can shift into first no problem. Then 1-2 no problem, then 3-4 no problem but when i go to downshift from 3-2 I get blocked out. It seems if I pump the pedal a few times I can get it into gear. When i go to downshift from 4-3, I dont seem to have a problem.
I am using a South Bend clutch, with a Competition flywheel. I shimmed the fork so that it sits closer to the drivers side. The bell housing has both dowel pins installed and all bolts are torqued down to spec. I am using a new competion shift fork and oem TOB. I also installed an OEM Slave, and oem master, with steel braided line straight from master to slave.
Ive bled the slave many different ways including a speed bleeder, and then back to oem bleeder with a vacuum pump, and then also with a hose into a jar with brake fluid while someone steps on the pedal and i crack open the bleeder.
All ways of bleeding resulted in the same outcome.
When I adjust the pedal the way jacks video states to do it my clutch catches very high, with the same result, but seems to be less frequent. When i go clockwise on the adjustment it bring the clutch engagment point more towards the middle but still has the same problem.
The Tranny Im using is a jacks rebuilt tranny.
Ive been searching and searching for someone with a simialar problem but have not been able to find anyone.
Also all new bushings on the shifter inside the car and on the tranny itself.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Brian

Did you measure the step height in the flywheel before installation? Southbend clutches tend to have a slightly fatter disc material making the clutch drag. Did you do a clutch drag test?

I was having this problem so I pulled the tranny and pulled the flywheel and brought it to a machine shop who said it was pretty good shape .610 but they did clean it up a little to make sure it was within .608-.610 all around. Then i shimmed the fork and was hoping these two things would solve the problem but no luck.

When I pulled the flywheel this is what the clutch looked like after about 100 miles

Only the outside edge of the clutch disc is making contact. Looks like the flywheel surface isn't flat and the step height of the friction surface is more than the step around the outside edge.

When I pulled the flywheel I brought it to a machine shop and they said the flywheel was pretty good. Even still I had them resurface it to make sure and now I'm still having the same problem.

If you are having to pump the clutch up to downshift, it still makes me think its Hydraulic related, but I am very concerned with that friction disk picture. It appears to me that it is still dragging, or only catching on the outside edge. Now is it the pumping of the clutch that allows you to go into gear, or simply that you are taking longer and allowing the RPM to drop, essentially lessening the load on the syncro's?

The clutch, pp, and flywheel were all brand new.
I'm not sure if it's the pumping or just the rpms dropping. But even sometimes from a stop I need to pump the pedal to get in gear. Not sure if it's just randomly goes into gear or if it's because I'm pumping the pedal.
What's weird to me is that this is only happening when downshifting.

Did you check your master cylinder. I recently upgraded my clutch to comp 3 and the clutch would work for a short time then suddenly not have enough pressure to get into gear. Once I replaced the master cylinder all was good.

And when I first was having this problem, I swapped out the slave, master and installed a ss line straight from the slave to master. All with oem parts but it didn't make a difference

Do you have a 1G block? If so, do you still have the counterweight on the shifter on the trans? i had to cut mine off to shift easier, it was rubbing the coolant hose

@Jacolu3 even though your clutch is getting uneven wear.... you still have engagement and disengagement. Im leaning towards the synchros preventing your downshifts.

Have you tried starting the car... hold in the clutch and just shift it into all gears going up and then back down... any resistance there?

I just went out and tried this and no resistance what so ever. Smooth up and downshifting

Not much new. Haven't driven the car that much lately. Just got the parts for SD so I'm in the process of switching over. Waiting on one more part then I'll be testing it out
