I recently bought my second DSM and scheme to combine them to make one good one.

First love was a 91 GSX who’s trans exploded (trans always sounded rough) and the other a 92 GSX with a bad motor (knocking, still runs though!).

I recently bought the 92 because it had a better body with no rust and a 4 bolt rear.

I definitely plan to remove the motor from my 91, but asides from arbitrarily removing every bolted on mechanical part along with interior pieces I have no real idea what to harvest .

I imagine being in this position gives me a good chance to have a decent supply of parts that may (will) come in handy.

My question is, what parts should I scavenge from my 91 GSX before I send it off to the scrapper?

I already plan on taking the clutch master since I installed it a month before my trans died.

I even replaced the rear calipers on the 91 and plan on taking them too.

So if you have any suggestions I would love to hear what you have to say from both experience and opinion. Thanks.

If I were you, take everything that's in good shape and either swap out, or sell the parts. Since your gonna take it to the scrapper ya might as well milk it for everything its worth. Put it up as a part out on here and/or craigslist.

Yeh I did this a few years back 2 cars one running one. Not took practically everything off the shell. Seats wire harness, headlights etc even the doors took it to get junked with no wheels on it on a trailer of course. Never know when u need an extra part

I've done this to a few cars at junkyards, stripping them off everything with value..

Of course the obvious...
Leather seats if it has them
bov
turbo
rear end and axles
valve cover
ECU
keep the junk trans as a core
gauge cluster if low mileage
interior plastics that tend to crack
hatch struts (if they work)
head/tail lights if in good shape
radiator
smic (3000gt guys buy these)
bumpers if in good shape
transfer case

These are just some of the parts that hold their value and or can be worth keeping around as replacements for if anything on the 92 breaks.

What would be a top 10 items to take in your opinions? There has got to be some parts I wouldn't think to take and I don't wanna be kicking myself knowing I could have had it on hand. Thanks.

bigbird94 -- wow, just missed that post by a few minutes. Good info. I'm gonna start putting together a list that I can just rundown and check off as I remove stuff. That'd be cool to have some sort of ultimate DSM scavenging guide haha. i wonder if it'd be worth taking the rear quarter glass out just in case?

Personally I'd take all the glass.

Yeah, storage isn't really an issue luckily. I was thinking about pulling out the rear glass just because i know that can get expensive when you need it. Just need to figure out how to do it without breaking it!

So, consensus seems I should go crazy with some tools until every removable item is in a box. Guess my weekend is spoken for : )

Also, would it be possible to remove parts of the braking system (rear calipers) and still be able to put it on a trailer safely to recycle it? Thanks again for your replies.

Too bad I cant post parts in classifieds yet. I'm sure someone out there wants some 1ga body parts.

Keep everything you have storage space for. These cars, especially the 1g's, are getting really difficult to find parts for.

If the body is straight, sell it as a shell. Enough of these get parted out already, then have usable shells crushed.
