Ok I can't seem to find a parts list for a t belt job on a 420a motor. I bought a junkyard motor so swap in the motor is out of the car at the moment.my mechanic told me to get allthe parts and he is going to do it. So fAr my list is
Timing belt
Timing belt tensioner
Tensioner pulley
Idler pulley
And water pump
Am I missing anything? I found a diagram on line and this is all it had. I have previously owned. 4g63 and I know that it had a balance shaft belt and such. I didn't know if the 420a is the same way?

so there is no balance shaft belt

and what is the benefeit to having a mechanicaly adjuster compared to hydraulic?

See here: VIN 'Y' 2.0 DOHC 420A Timing Belt & Tensioner KIT Avenger, Breeze, Eclipse, Neon, Sebring, Stratus, Talon Mechanical conversion package

Apparently they put less load on the belt if/when the system resonates. I've got one on my car. It works. I also think it's slightly easier to deal with than the hydraulic tensioner.

The downside to the mechanical tensioners is you need to keep up with it to check and see if the proper tension is applied still.

:idontknow: 10k+ miles and no problems so far. I don't see why it would lose tension unless the bolt wasn't torqued correctly or the thing outright failed.

I'm just basing off of what I've read. Vibrations and what-not causing it to change if it's a threaded type. I've personally never used one so I don't know for sure.

In your case, much cheaper in the long run :thumb:

Everything on your list is what you will need, I also recomend PD. I got all of my components from there and was very pleased with their service. I would also put in new front and rear main seals while you have the engine out as they are known to leak.

I had my timing belt components changed not so long ago. I found a gates kit with belt and pulleys for less that $100 by price checking and matching between typical parts stores. Gates is gates. I also decided to stick with the hydraulic tensioner and bought a new one along with the water pump and seals. While you are in the area and everything is out of the way if you have the funds get a udp. I unfortunately did not have the funds for a udp myself, but I recommend doing that and get the appropriate accessory belts. Also a new oil pump may not be a bad idea. My mechanic said that is one of the components he has never witnessed failing. But if you are overhauling an engine that sat for a while, then in that case I would change and replace anything and everything I am able to. More you do now the less you have to worry about down the road. Preventive and regular maintenance goes a long way.

Ive started ording my parts after hitting 100000 miles.

On the way I have:
Blue Gates Timing Belt
Blue Gates Serp Belts
Master Pro waterpump
NGK Spark Plug Wires

Soon to be ordered:
Oil Pump
Idler Pulleys
UDP (Dont know by who or even if Its a good idea in my case, PS, Alt, HB, and AC)
OBX Adjustable Cam Gears (Unless I can find some new OEM ones)
Tensioner (Still debating Hydraulic vs Mechinical)
MSD Coil Pack
Oil Pan w/gasket

Its alot on my list but then again my job is going to be a massive and slow 3-4 day process.

hey leon, if you get the OBX cam gears, let me know how those work.
I am also wondering where to get a new under drive pulley, is there a specific brand? or try to find another good stock one?

I might not have a choice. Its not so much the price that's concerning me but the fact that they are adjustable. I don't see the need for my 420a to have adjustable cam gears at all. Though I will have the flexibility I guess to adjust, ill also have that bigger margin of error. As far as a harmonic balancer udp. I have only see one on amazon its red and smaller than the stock pulley which raises some concerns.

Why would anyone need new head bolts for a timing job? The valve cover gaskests and other gaskets as seen fit should be enough.

AF/X or Unorthodox Racing used to be the underdrive pulleys to get. I'm not sure if either of them are still made, but they pop up on eBay and in the classifieds occasionally.

The head bolts are TTY (torque to yield), which means they stretch and aren't supposed to be reused once they've been torqued. Mark (bullettdsm) has had success with reusing them, however, so maybe he can give you some advice there...

Im not Mark but you can reuse the head bolts if they are not stretched, however, if you are not taking the head off to replace the head gasket you don't need to replace the head bolts.

I'm still lost as to why he would need headbolts for a timing belt job? Unless I missed something completely. I understand he plans on a motorswap, but that information is irrelavent towards a timing belt job on the current motor.

Maybe he thought the OP was replacing his head gasket, too. You're right, there's no need to touch the head bolts if he's just replacing the timing components.

Okay. I was worried for a minute. My shopping list was about to get big

Neither the AF/X or the Unorthodox underdrive pulleys are made anylonger. Only option is to find them used. Some people have used the Bomz Racing ones, but you need to take them to a machine shop and have them balanced properly.

Be very careful when you are setting the torque spec on the aluminum parts like the oil pump and water pump. I had a bolt break off in the oil pump when I was torquing the tensioner to the oil pump and couldn't get the bolt out with a easy out and just ending up spending more money on a new oil pump :notgood: Just my two cents

I'm just getting to my timing rebuild now, and my friend (who rebuilt the engine in my car the first time) said he never replaces the timing pulleys and they are usually fine.

How often do those things 'give out'?

Honestly, its been my experience from the timing belt jobs I have seen, that its actually the pulleys that give out first (not the tensioner as many think). But I have also re-used pulleys with no ill effects.

You have to ask yourself this question, "Are you feeling lucky....punk?" (LOL, sorry it just fit there). Seriously, you have to ask yourself if its worth saving the few extra bucks, with the chance that you might be doing the job again?

Honest question; give an honest answer and go with it.
