i think the black stripe idea would look good on an early car like mine, with the black roof and cockpit...also, how would i match paint for the rims? i have stock rims and the car is the lasalle silver

G_S_X, if you painted the hood black, all people would see underneath the scratched up CF look sticker is black paint.

You don't understand my idea.. the point is so they think im a ricer ... when in reality i know I have a real cf hood ;)

sorry, man... I can't agree with you on this... I think painting any carbon fiber piece would just seem a bit daft... CF parts were mainly designed for the look of carbon fiber parts. painting the hood would totally blow that scheme.

Plus, you're reading my opinions... Carbon Fiber is my favorite color! :D

Actually carbon fiber parts were mainly designed because of its incredible strength to weight ratio, and its superior versitility in many areas. Then the ricers got their hands on it

Yeah, I know... but wouldn't you rather keep a CF hood looking like CF to show off that you have CF on your car, or would you get a bunch of CF parts, and paint them all (adding more weight, albiet not much)???

I think not.

And yes, the Ricers got their hands on CF and made it all for looks... Kinda sucks, doesn't it?

P.s. Fiberglass parts are made to be painted... CF parts are made to look like some slick space-age material that makes your car nice and light. :p

You obviously didn't read my first post very carefully .. I thought it was a great idea hahah

carbon fiber hoods are just fiberglass hoods with a layer of carbon fiber on top of them for the look.

they're rice.

My super ultimate idea of the century is this...
I take my CF hood, paint it black, then i get a fake CF hood sticker that they sell at kragen and put it on my hood. Then I purposely start scratching up the sticker so people walk by and are like... " Hey look at that ricer... with the fake CF hood sticker... " WHEN REALLY ITS CF !!! OWN3D!!!!

That is actually done on the 2004 Z16 Commemorative Z06 Corvette. The hood is all CF but they painted it blue with stripes AND used carbon fiber sticker that says CARBON FIBER and stuck it on the hood to act as another stripe.

Whoever in GM who thought about this should be shot.

Some quickies

I'm going to revive this old thread.... gotta love the search feature... but I was wondering what all extra needs to be done to paint Carbon Fibre? Just body filler, sand, filler, sand, primer, paint, paint, paint, clear coat, clear coat?

I like the second photo, better than the first. It would be kind of interesting to leave some carbon showing. My main interest in a Carbon Fibre hood would be for the vents on top to promote cooling. But I don't want to show it off and be garish... I want to look kinda stock.

Check my gallery. I think I pulled it off. I just don't like leaving it black. Looks like an unpainted kit to me. Painting some helps blend it to make it look completed IMO.

You did pull the carbonfiber with paint off very nicely and I've had a picture of it on my computer for a long time. How is the line on you're paint? is it very noticable or did they blend it well with another coat of clear on the whole thing? you should get some upclose pictures of just the hood line for us.

I also like the second third photochop posted. It looks like it might work making a line aroudnt he front of the hump and running it all the way back, sort of like what 9d9 did.

I'm going to paint my carbon fiber hood and I was just wondering if there was any special prep involved.

You need to strip the clear coat first and prep it like any other car paint which needs painted...ie sanded, primer, paint, then clear coat the paint.

EW...I have a white car and the carbon fiber hood on the stock white looks sweet...I have a Talon so its already kinda 2-tone...IM gonna save for the Carbon Fiber hatch as well so it has a nice black/white color effect.

Well I decided to paint it because the clear coat that is on it cracked, what do you strip it with that won't hurt the carbon fiber?

You don't strip the clear coat off... rough it up, prime, sand, base, clear. Take it to a shop.

Hey everybody. I was wondering what the steps would be to painting a Carbon Fiber hood. I searched the forums, but there wasn't a specific answer that I came upon to painting CF. My hood is very dull from sitting in the sun for a while, and has a few tiny cracks, but nothing major. I was wondering if I could just sand it, primer it, base paint it, and clearcoat it the same color as my car? Is it just like painting a metal hood? Please let me know, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much.

Wet sand, prime, base coat and clear coat.

DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF PAINT STRIPPER ON YOUR CARBON FIBER HOOD!

I used the 3 step sanding sponges. Comes with a tough grit, then a preping, then a fine grit that I used to wetsand. Then I painted, wet sanded, painted again, and clear coated.

Great! Finally a good answer on how to paint a carbon fiber hood. Would I be able to find 600 dry at any Home Depot? Why do some say wetsand, and other say dry-sand? Also, if anybody has any photos of painted cf hoods, please post them here.

Once again, thank you very much. I'm going to buy the materials tomorrow and I'll keep everybody updated on the before and after.
