Hello everyone. I Just purchased my first DSM. It is a 96 Eclipse Spyder Gs. The guy I bought it from has everything rigged on this car. But It will make a good hobby for this summer.

First thing there was no intake system at all on this car when i bought it (including the MAS). So how does the car run? It will idle at 900rpm and runs smoothly. Which is very surprising to me because most cars will not run at all without the MAS hooked up.

I am a auto mechanic but I don't know a lot about these cars. I hooked it up to my diagnostic machine and it threw. Mass air flow sensor, intake air temperature sensor, and manifold absolute presser sensor. Which would all contribute to the MAS not being there. So I need to get a hold of a cheap one so hopefully someone on here can help me with that.

I also was looking through all the diagnostic functions an pulled up the oxy sensors and timing. At idle front was putting out 1v and rear was 0.94v does this sound correct? Would the MAS affect the oxy's? Also is there a way to convert the oxy's volts to see if it is running lean, rich,or stoich. Also timing at idle was retarded 1 degree and at 3k was advanced only 4 degrees Does this sound correct. Thanks in advanced.

Besides that the FnF Blitz bodykit looks and fits like crap so i am looking to get some 97+ bumpers. So dont write on here that my car is Rice and looks like crap because I know it is and you are not cool just because you can hop on your moms computer and make fun of people who work and pay their taxes and want to make their car how they want it. To each his own even though I too think my car is rice you have no rite to make someone else feel bad about their love for cars. Which is what we are all here for in the first place. To love cars!

Any way here are some pics of the car and one of the connector I think is for the MAS.

Thanks Again Adam

The second from last pic makes the car look like a toy. LOL

hey man, where do you work at? jw since im from york too..

i cant really answer your questions about the problems your having with the spyder.. but your car looks like it could use some work as far as the body, but its really not that bad, bumpers arent that hard to find for these cars - and the wheels look nice and clean.

what are you looking for in your car? just a daily driver, are you looking to modify it?

You're definitely missing the MAS- it's a wonder the car runs at all.

It's going to be hard to diagnose what's missing and what you can repair easily. If the idiotic previous owner had any clue what he was doing, he would've known that removing the MAS to install that precious short-ram intake in it's place (ROFL) will hurt power 10 times more than it would help it.

Alot of the ricer dooshes look at Honda engine bay photos and copy what they see or hear, not realizing that our cars need certain parts to survive that are missing from a Honda.

Most all upstream (pre cat) oxygen sensors ready between 100-800mv or .1v-.8v. When the air/fuel mixture is rich and there is little O2 in the exhaust, the difference in oxygen levels across the sensing element generates a voltage through the sensor's platinum electrodes, typically 0.8 to 0.9 volts. In your case you said it was 1v so that means its reading rich. The sensor can be checked by reading the sensor's output voltage to make sure it corresponds with the air/fuel mixture (low when lean, high when rich). The voltage signal can also be displayed as a waveform on an oscilloscope to make sure the signal is changing back and forth from rich to lean and is responding quickly enough to changes in the air/fuel ratio

I am looking into a 300whp DD but until then I just want this thing to get me back and forth to work.

Just so you don't think I crazy I was planning on getting a 6bolt from the scrap yard and building it this summer then dropping it in and tuning this winter.

Thanks sooo much that is what i needed to know.

:thumb: Anytime man, glad i could be of some help. If you have access to an osciliscope that is the best way to see if they are bad or not in my opion. You can induce a rich or lean condition and watch how long it takes the sensor to react, its pretty cool actually.

ooh yea i remember that meineke, yea i worked at red lion chevy last summer as a detailer then went away to school for a while and now im trying to get my job back at RL chevy for the summer again.. how far is kashner from chevy?

It's nice to see some local guys. I'm from Hanover but spend most of my time in York. I wish I could help you out with some of your questions but I'm still shocked that your car ran without the MAS hooked up, LOL.

If the MAS is not hooked up, the ecu bases fuel trims off of a table using the TPS and CAS, but it should have thrown a few codes, so your check engine light may be disconnected. You can also put a 2.0 head on the 2.4 block and have a DOHC turbo 2.4 should make a good DD.

few links I found, might be something interesting/useful

Thanks for the links. I posted the codes it threw. (MASS air, Intake temp, and Manifold absolute pressure) Which all go back to the MAS not being there. so as soon as I get a MAS i shouldn't have a CEL any more.
