I'm helping a buddy put together a motor with spare parts we have around.

The motor we are building is a 1g 6bolt. We have a good 2g 7bolt timing belt and oil pan we would like to use. Will it work on the 1g 6bolt?

sorry man but the oil pans are different on a 6 bolt the oil pan pops out and a 7 bolt is pushed in and this is on the belt side of motor

If I were you I would just pick up a grand new timing belt since the engine is out of the car right now... those are the life of the engine. Better safe than sorry. Also you can't use the 7bolt oil pan on the 6 bolt. They do not interchange

Defiantly replace the timing belt with a new one. I wouldn't even think of putting a belt on I "just had lying around." That's when things start getting expensive. When I worked in the Eagle dealer a while back, if someone called in saying they were in the highway and they heard a rattle followed by an immediate shut down of the engine, we started the quote at a grand and went up. That was minimum a machining of the head, new belt, and a set of valves. It only got more expensive as I took motors apart and found more things wrong.

It cannot be stressed enough, put a new belt in there every 85,000 miles, or everytime the engine comes out if the engine bay (whichever comes first, preventative is cheaper then repair).

I always thought the oil pans were interchangeable. Now I know. A new timing belt is 40 bucks at the auto stores around here so I'm with the majority here. Buy new and don't worry about it later.
