overheating

ok this is my problem my car runs fine and runs strong with no issues that im aware of and has no past history of faliure or accendets or any type of dammege that can cause a overheating problem my car has never overheated before//

The problem= for the last 3 weeks or so when i go to start up my car everything seems to be fine the car starts up begins to warm up and fall into idle but once the car reaches its temp sometimes it will start to over heat but not to the point were the needle would reach the H just enough to freak me out so the funny part is if i rev my engin a couple times not at high rpm just between 3-4 rpm the temp gauge will start to go down little by little intill it reaches its temp again afther this the car runs fine and dose not overheat while in mottion but once i shut it off and start it again most of the time it dose the same thing all over again so i rev it gos down or put the heater on blast and most likely sometimes it gos down as well ....dose anyone know what could be wrong please let me know if you have any idea it will help thanks

Well change your thermostat cheap and easy. Flush your radiator and see that solves the problem.
If it doesn't might be your waterpump

Also, inspect your hoses for any small holes/leaks/gashes/wear (especially your upper and lower heater hoses...these are the ones that run to the firewall). I just had to replace mine, had a hole in my lower heater hose that was causing a small coolant leak (which was unnoticeable because the small amount of coolant that was leaking out was evaporating due to the engine heat around it). Do you smell any coolant burning anywhere when the car is overheating?

Oh, before you change out your thermostat, take it out and check it by boiling it in a pot of water (you should see it move when you put it in the boiling water). If it doesn't move in the boiling water, then your thermostat definitely needs replaced.

Yea I would first check the thermostat and because it is cheap and easy.

I just quoted this again a month ago. Try going through this little check list;

Leak in the cooling system;
Look for the easy obvious; signs of leakeage. Puddles on the ground. Lots of coolant on the tranny/backside of engine (pesky heater hoses)

Cooling fans;
Sit at idle to see if the fan comes on (duh). If they don't, you may have to rev it up a couple o' few of times to get heat going. Of course, watch the gauge as you do it.

Thermostat;
Pull thermostat and check it by boiling it in water and seeing if it opens fully (though most just replace it. Cheap and easy flip flop).

Radiator cap;
Have the radiator cap pressure tested (though, like the thermostat, most just replace it),

Radiator;
Look for obvious signs of rust and green/white flake build up on the exterior (usually located on the lower half). See if fins are just flaking off. Look for "wet spots". Pull radiator and have it pressure tested.

Blockage in the cooling system;
Flush the cooling system seperately (radiator then engine side) to check for blockage.

Water pump;
Check for signs of "weepage" under the water pump. Listen for grinding or squeaking (usually a chirping sound) coming from water pump. Look in the radiator cap opening and see if the coolant is actually moving (obviously, do this when engine is cold).

Headgasket;
Comp check and leak down. Look for oil contanimation or oil levels filling themselves up, . Look for air bubbles in the coolant as well as hardening of the coolant lines(pressurizing from the headgasket allowing combustion chamber pressure in the cooling system). Look for white smoke out of the exhaust after warm up. Check for hydrocarbons in the coolant (though this all could be good, but you could still have a bad headgasket. That's the tricky part).

thanks eveyrbody for the information once i get up tommorow morrning im going to check all these things out i also just blew my passenger side axle so......suxs...i have some time to look into this overheating problem...thanks guys
