Ocean springs, Mississippi
I broke a valve over the weekend and I'm looking to upgrade the valve train for future growth. What kind would you recommend? Do I need to upgrade valves or can I get away with stock? I'm running stock cams for now. HP goals are 400whp give or take.

This should help

I am sure that your stock valve springs are shot by now, so yes replace them.

Depending on what budget is and what cams you want to upgrade to down the road.

If your budget is tight look at the BC1100 springs with stock retainers, as long as you do not want to run the Kelford cams or clones , and some of the GS grinds.

I would not bother with the Evo VIII spring and retainers, I see no benifit to them.

I speak about them in this thread

Thanks Bogus you've been a great help on my past few threads! The link was a great help pretty much breaks it down in lament terms for me LOL. I found some GSC beehive springs and retainers for roughly $250

GSC Power-Division #5040 includes new Titanium Retainer set and will utilities the stock oem seat, this is a simple change with no need to change seals or spring seats. This kit is capable of 9500RPMS, with as much as 12.5mm of lift (or .285" of camlift). This is a must have for anyone pushing the limits but on less aggressive camshafts such as the S1 on road racing setups or S2 all setups.

Spring pressure: Seat at 1.54"= 75 pounds .300"= 170 pounds .400"= 220 pounds CoilBind .620" Max lift 12.5mm of lift (or .285" of camlift)

I've been looking at cams and I think I'm gonna run HKS 272's if I can get away with it on these.

Link me to the springs so I can check them out.

For valves, look at Engnbldr on ebay, good SS valves at a good price.

Those are more spring than you need for the HKS cams.

The write up is good on them, I like the installed height on the kit you are looking at. Should work with the Kelfords, and as they said the GS2 cams, From what I have come to understand those are the big bad boys on the block.

But if you want the HKS cams, a set of BC1100 with stock retainers will fit the bill.

Yea their also a $100 more than I thought but still isn't that bad. Is there a down side to running to much spring? Or should cams and springs be bought accordingly?

On the 4g... no not a down side for the most part, the installed seat pressure is higher on the GS springs than the BC.

70 on the BC and 95 on the GS,

With the GS spring, you will not be working it all that haed with the HKS cams, so you will deff be out of valve float, and keep a crisp rev to the engine.

But if you do decide on diffrent cams down the road, like the GS2 or Kelford 272, the head will be ready for them.

From the looks of it the S1's are good for my goal and can run with stock springs. So if too much isnt good ill just run the bc's you mention

The GSC springs are the same as the Kiggley springs. While they can be used with the factory spring locators, the spring pressure is insufficient. That is why the Kiggley springs come with .120" thick locators. That effectively reduces the installed height and increases the spring pressure into an acceptable range. At around $370, the GSC springs aren't much of a deal considering the Kiggleys are $389.
