Hey guys, I've not had a DSM in 20 years, I was active on DSMTaLK back in the day. Anyway, my son recently picked up a 97 GST in need of some rehab, it has an FP Black on it and is on speed density, yet I see no signs of a tuned ECU. When I pulled the ECU there is no socketed chip or anything. How is this even possible, for it to be on speed density without software? It only has 3 codes, P0130, P0135, and P1603.

Car is a wiring mess, complete with wire nuts and electrical tape. UGH

ECU was not under the radio, it was under the carpet on the passenger side floor. LOL. I'm starting to think maybe the car had a different ECU that the previous/previous owner yanked when they sold it, since these 97 non EPROM ECUs can't be tuned. Does that make sense?

I was gonna say maybe it had a black box ECU but I bet the previous owner yanked out the EPROM ECU with ECMLink and sold it, the combo is selling easily for $800-1000 these days.

Definitely needs something. I'm guessing they threw stock injectors back in as well.

DSMtalk user name would have been “Spyderturbo” as I had a 97 GST Spyder

Plot thickens, after researching the ecu tag I figured out it’s from an 03 2.4, and from what I’ve read these 3g boxes can be flashed with an open source software with an “evo” base rom. This is fun!

Yea I found some stuff on a 3g site that lead me to the ECUflash open source software, none of my existing Vag or BMW cables work of course so need to order another cable.

Car is full of hotness like this. LOL

Overall the body and the towers are rust free, it needs some clean up, but my boy got a pretty good deal.

if I recall correctly the 3g black box is very similar to the evo8 ecu. more memory and slightly faster than the 98-99 black box ecu.

you will need the tactrix cable.

ecmflash software for editing files

ceddy mods for file definitions

evoscan for datalogging.

its not difficult to use once you figure out how to use it.

Car is just full of surprises, some of them not so bad at all!
