OK guys after searching and searching Google after Google I cant find a answer to this. I have a newly rebuilt 1g fwd turbo motor and i start it up and shut it down and notice a leak. First thought main seal so I take the oil pump off change every seal other that the oil pump shaft I know a:ohdamn: moment. My question is can I change the outer shaft seal to the pump or do i have to take the pump plate off again? O btw balance shafts are removed.

you will have to take off the pump plate again to ensure a proper seal.

Um, no. The only thing that will need to be removed is the oil pump sprocket. From there the seal can be pried out and a new one installed. There is nothing that you could do with the pump taken apart that would make it seal better.

Yes, as Bryan said, you can just change the seal. Before removing the old one, look at how it sat in the cover, if its flush or pressing just further of the lip. You can change them, I have on my car after finding my high oil pressure was causing the leak.

i have the same issue with a leaking seal! i replaced all 3 of mine and then after i start it up i find my front balance shaft seal leaking so im replacing it again as i dont know if i can get it out without damaging it.

i feel your pain and frustration as you will have to re time the car, but ive got a pain of an ass location as i can not get anything straight at the location grrrrr hope you sort it though

The better question is, "Why is the oil pump seal leaking on my newly rebuilt engine?"

If you are running a stubby shaft BSE, you have to be extra careful about the timing belt tension, get it too tight, the you can #### the gears in the oil pump, and that will unload on side of the seal allowing an oil leak.

I had the same issue on my freshly rebuilt engine. I tensioned the belt to being able to put the pin in and out (the common agreed upon way of doing it) and it leaked, so I replaced the seal behind the oil pump sprocket that gets run by the belt. I had the bse with mitsu stubby shaft. It still leaked, this was a top line pump so I bought another top line pump and the AMS race balance shaft and installed that. It's been bone dry to this day.

Behind the oil pump sprocket(stubby shaft) there is a o ring that goes on the shaft just out it on should fix your issue.

I don't know where the idea came from that the belt is tensioned correctly when you can put the pin in the tensioner. If you measure the distance from the top of the pin to the housing, it comes to about 3.5mm. Specs call for 3.8 to 4.2mm. The only time the grenade pin has to be used is when you remove the tensioner to replace it or the water pump. This is what caused most oil pump shaft seal leaks.
