2G oil pump leak

I noticed a slight oil leak coming from what appears to be the oil pump . just curious as to how in depth of a fix this is/ how much it will cost me to replace/fix

you basically have to take off all the belts. it isn't going to be a 20 minute job. Maybe 4 hours... it is basically a timing belt job plus a little more.

Plus ALOT more. Oil pump won't come off unless you pull the oil pan which requires the downpipe and transfer case to be pulled as well. And if you have balance shafts, good luck getting that pump out without dropping the engine down far enough to clear the frame.

If I were you, I would eliminate the balance shafts while you're in there if you're going to take the pump off. Its 15 minutes extra work.

Are you sure you're oil pan isn't just leaking? How do you know for sure its the pump?

I had the car on a lift today and when you get the oil pressure up a little it starts dripping a little from what looks like the oil pump

The oil pump is more or less internal to the engine. The only place you would see the oil pump leaking would be the castle plug or the oil pump sprocket and technically speaking those are on the front casing. Any other leak out of the oil pump would go right back into the oil pan. Here is a picture of the oil pump, follow the left shaft down:

The oil pump housing (also known as the front casing/cover), on the other hand, has a lot more places it can leak. Below is a picture of the front casing. The oil pump exists on the right hand side of this piece, but on the opposite face as shown above. The shaft poking out is for the oil pump sprocket. As you can see it has seal there. The hole right above that is for the castle plug which should have an o-ring with it.

Other possible places for leaks are the front main seal, the front balance shaft seal, the hole for the balance shaft tensioner, the front casing gasket, the timing belt hydraulic tensioner holes, the oil pan, or the oil filter housing. The bottom left of the front casing is where the oil filter housing goes.

Yep its a lot of work timing belt, job, and removing the pump i did mine with the engine out.

Does anyone have a picture of the Drivers side underside of the motor, I could point out where the oil was coming from if I had that. I should have taken a picture.

An oil leak can come from anywhere. A valve cover gasket can leak oil down and behind the timing cover and make it seem like the front case is leaking. its nearly impossible to chase an oil leak thru pictures. You'll have to start from the top and work your way down.

we cleaned the entire side of the motor with brake cleaner and watched where the oil leak came from.... I'm just trying to get a pic so I can show you guys where the leak was.

Here is an oil filter housing -- yours will look similar but not exactly, I'm sure; everything else on the driver side is or should be behind the timing belt cover.

I actually looked through that thread to try and find a pic but none are taken from the underside of the motor to be able to point out where the leak is

Gotta start taking it apart to get a better look. Buy a new timing belt, water pump, and hydraulic tensioner whiel you're at it.

It could be a number of things that are leaking. You really gotta tear it apart and start replacing gaskets, cleaning parts, etc....

You'll have to delicately describe where exactly in that picture, save a copy of that picture to your computer and draw on it in Paint and attach it to your next post, or give us something else to work on here. There are a ton of places oil could be coming from in that picture.

Here's more, though none of us can honestly help more than that without a better description. Ultimately you will be the one finding the leak, we can only point you in certain directions.

Yeah, that's the timing cover. All that other stuff that was brought up earlier is underneath that. Now would be the time to take BrokenTsi's advice and take things apart. You probably have a mess of oil behind the cover and a good way to tackle it is -- after removing the timing cover and reinstalling the alternator belt -- clean the front casing and anything covered in oil with brake cleaner. Then run the engine and keep an eye out on where the oil comes from first. As BrokenTsi also mentioned, the leak could very well be coming from the top half of the engine and just dripping down.

There is also the idea of using a UV leak detector dye to track it down, though I have never tried that myself. Keep us updated on how it goes.
