Hey guys. My oil line broke on the highway due to the intercooler piping keep rubbing against it. When it broke, the oil pressure light did not go on so I kept on driving it without knowing i was leakin a ton of oil. It got to a point where my car just stop picking up any speed and slows down. I tried clutching to go down a gear to see if i can pick up any speed but that didnt work. So I go back into neutral and my car just died out. Got to the side and i checked my dipstick and there was abosolutely no oil. I opened up the oil cap and smoke was coming out of it like i toasted something. I tried adding oil to it and it started rite up. I patched up the crack a little bit and drove it to a friend house nearby. We changed the oil line and at first i thought it was fine. Then i notice when i step on the gas the car barely want to go anywhere. Drove it home and now im hearing a loud noise coming from my engine and it shuts off everytime i go back to neutral from a high gear. Sorry for all that reading but can anyone help me on this? Any idea what went wrong? Thanks

sounds like you may have seized the bearings....

drop the oil pan and inspect, also pull the Valve cover and the cam caps keep them in order and what side/cam they go on

you will be looking for heavy scuffing and gaulled marks, also look for blue/black colors on the big end of the rods

you starved the engine for oil, so a rebuild will be in your near future.

if theres not significant scaring on the crank you might be able to get away with polishing the crank and slapping in new bearings. tri metal bearings run like $100 for rod and mains. but again this is ONLY IF there is not scaring. if you have any doubts at all take the crank to a machine shop and ask them.

and you could always make it easy on your self and just drop the crank instead of removing the engine if your lazy like me and hate cherry pickers haha!

I'm going to agree with Bogus, as you were driving for a while with little to no oil. The smoke from the oil cap is a sign of extreme heat. You will most likely be needing a new bottom end (rods, bearings, crank) not only from the metal on metal damage but from the extreme heat as well which is the discoloration. Not to mention cams might be shot too if no oil was getting there which is likely as the head is the last part to receive oil.

I had a similar thing happen to me, and my motor ended up seizing. It turned out that all that could go wrong did, i snapped a rod bearing in half and the crank is shot and so are my cams, i would defiantly have it looked at before driving because you will cause a lot of damage and it will cost a lot of money.

Definitely stop and inspect before starting the car again, some of your engine may still be saveable, but the more you run it the more parts you destroy. Also, if there is scarring and metal shavings make sure you replace your front case and oil filter housing during your rebuild. Many have learned the hard way that no matter how well you clean parts like these, there are always little shavings that remain. Dont want to toast the new engine over 100 dollars in parts.
