Alright guys, i'm stuill sorta a newbie on the site (just cuz i dont post here much), i wasn't too sure where to put this ?, but i was wondering why my friends' oil light keeps coming on, his oil pressure gauge doesn't work and he is waiting on a new one, but when he "get's on it" his light comes on . . .just wondering if you all had any info on this, thanx alot.

if the light looks like a oil can then the car is low on oil. check the oil and fill if needed.

Those sensors go bad a lot. If you check your oil and its low then that may indeed be the cause of it going off. However, the sensor itself may be bad and in need of replacement. I myself am on my third idiot light sensor. Also i would suggest getting some aftermarket type mechanical gauge as the stocker isn't exactly the most accurate. I plan on getting an autometer mechanical one myself.

Another thought would be the oil pump itself. If you have the right amount of oil, and replaced the sensor and the light is still on, you may have a dying oil pump.

Definetly a lack of oil in the pan. At high RPM a lot of oil is at the top of the motor, so if the oil is low all of the oil in the head trying to run down to the pan. I would ad a few quarts and see what happens, if it don't imporve check into a sensor. Keep in mind the Oil pressure guage and oil pressure light are on seprate sending units.

The light coming on doesn't mean that the engine is low on oil. It is oil pressure, not oil level, and low oil pressure can be caused by a few different things. Low oil level can cause low oil pressure but that doesnt mean that you definitely need to add a couple of quarts. Check the oil level on the dipstick before you add anything.

it can be a few things as most people have stated so far in this forum. i would think that checking the oil to trouble shoot this problem would be the simplest way to check. also are you getting lifter tick. that would be a pretty good sign too!
