Oil Leak near timing belt tensioner

Basically my car was leaking oil badly, getting on the timing belt which was slinging it everywhere, I took the motor apart(was also burning some oil). To check things out, and replace the belt(timing belt+oil=bad) and fix the leak(I hope).

Well the tensioner itself has oil on it, and there is oil all over the top of the timing cover(The inner metal one for timing belt b(aka balance shaft).
I am not sure if the tensioner is leaking or if something else in or near the inner timing cover is, I'm looking for input on the most likely culprit or a list of all the possibilities in that general area. But at least now I have a more specific area to look in.

Sounds like your Cam Seals are no good, they are located at the back of the cam gears.
Check that out and see if it is leaking from there.

You can pull the timing cover off and inspect more clearly to find the leak.

Already replaced the cam seals(have not run the engine since however, still putting it back together) And I will be pulling the cover, just want to know what to look 3or, I would hate to put this all back together and still have this oil leak, I forgot to ask, but does the tensioner use a spring or oil pressure?

Its hydraulic if im correct inside is fluid if im correct, sometimes they can leak, mine did.

Could also be the oil pump seal or the front main/crankshaft seal. Wouldn't hurt to replace all of the seals while you have it out

I had an EVO 9 that was doing just what you are talking about. It had a timing job done before I bought it and it turned out that they didnt tighten the 2 bolts that hold the tensioner on and it was coming through the bottom hole and leaking into the front cover. Hope this helps!

Front balance shaft seal or crank seal. There's nowhere else in the area of the tensioner than oil could come from unless it's coming from behind the tensioner itself.

I had an EVO 9 that was doing just what you are talking about. It had a timing job done before I bought it and it turned out that they didnt tighten the 2 bolts that hold the tensioner on and it was coming through the bottom hole and leaking into the front cover. Hope this helps!

It was leaking through the tensioner bolts? The two on the tensioner arm?

Front balance shaft seal or crank seal. There's nowhere else in the area of the tensioner than oil could come from unless it's coming from behind the tensioner itself.

The tensioner bolt runs right between the two large oil galleries on the front of the block. Oil can find its way up thru that bolt. Seal both bolts when you put it back together.

Yep, but that leak is coming from up above that point. Its all over the place.
