I had large amounts of oil in my intake, the car would smoke when warming up and hard acceleration, so to fix this....

I made a oil catch can, well the smoke stopped.
The unforseen advantage was that the car also ran much better. I felt like I gained 20hp through the whole powerband.

Im thinking the ecu advanced timing because the oil was not there to make knock.

Am I on the right track of thought?

All I know is that this was the best free mod i have done.

Compare logs from before to logs after.
"like 20 hp"
Measured on the butt dyno? It's also possible that you're actually getting fuel and air in your engine where the oil once was.

Completely possible.

Not only was the oil taking up space where air/fuel could be, but a contaminated mixture is much more prone to knock. Knock=pulled timing=NO POWER.

So I think you are experiencing advanced timing due to lack of knock due to lack of oil in the combustion chamber :)

have you cleaned out your charge pipes and core yet? if not run a little gas through (after removing them of course) and let it set and get ALL of the oil out, you'd be surprised how much better your car will run with a clean set of pipes :D

I welded the catch can out of a 4" steel intake from a diesel and I bolted it to the frame under the intake where the BOV sits (the emptiest spot in the engine bay).

I was thinking advanced timing, because I was even getting bower pre boost.

I did clean out all the gunk from IC and pipe, and did notice it right away. the air running through the system even sounded louder.

I believe calan was trying to ask where you have the catch can lines hooked to up (vc>cc>air intake breather & etc), not where you physically put it.

LOL Ya I should have paid more attention....I connected both the pcv line (with valve) and the line from valve cover to intake by the MAF (forgot what that was called) to the same can. it has no breather cap just a divider and a shelf with holes and steel wool so the can can filter most oil before it goes into the intake (before and after turbo)

Im going to take the pcv out completely and just use a brass filling in its place and inline check valve. I will do this when I replace my valve cover and gasket.

Sorry if this sounds like babbling, doing this before my morning coffee
