If everyone just bought a tuners shirt and showed their support, and wore it to the shootout you should know. I met jwahl425 because he had his tuners shirt on. Then we raced heads up shortly afterwards. Cool guy. The nametags arent a bad idea though.

Respect much much appreciated, next year it should be even cleaner, probably still have the sidemount too.
I met you at the Amerihost, I had the silver POS Galant LOL. Next year I hope to be AWD and sporting a semi-built 2.4L DOHC :)

Did anyone notice a few odd things about Shep's underhood this year? I was looking at my pictures last night and realized he has no clutch master cylinder or brake booster under the hood, not to mention his new motor/tranny mounts and the front assembly holding the lights/hood pins on.
I know Brent rau does'nt use a clutch to shift because he told me to get in his car and he'd show me how it works, since I was asking him about his setup, maybe shep has something like it. Brent blew a head gasket on sunday and handed it to me to check out, so I do know for a fact that he uses a mitsu multi layer steel gasket.:dsm:

Looked like he was using a Powerglide transmission. They are automatic. High, low, reverse. Very popular in racing.

Powerglide + ford 9 inch = REALLY strong drive train.. I am suprised nobody else at the shootout was running auto w/ stall kit etc. If someone could hook up a decent auto they would get some really good times.

I remember, I actually found a picture on here of me and my buddy checking your car out. LOL I couldn't believe that it basically "bolted in". I think that car would be mean in black, I would never suspect it. So it sounds like ill see you next year, ill be looking out.

Just an idea for next year. :thumb:
I talked to about 20 people and i didnt even realize they were a part of the forum. I guess i should have assumed. I just like putting names with faces.
Yeah, next year, I'm going to buy a new Tuners shirt and have my username printed across the back.

I was at Burger King, and SBstar was 3 feet from me, talking to Matt (black2gGSX) and I didn't even know it was him. Maybe the printed shirt will help identify some people next year.

Yea, Im putting my name on the back of my car next year and a tuners shirt with my name as well. This year was my first time at the shootout and was there a the track all weekend sleeping there (at least trying) maybe 10 hrs in 2 days. That track is awsome anything goes there it seems like I think friday night they had every car on the street at the strip from mom and dads car to big trucks and alot were junk HELLO TECH!! Alot of things go down at that track that would get you kicked out of a track in illinois. I would be bad a ss to live out there but theres no money out there for work.
It was great to see Brents and Johns cars in action and meeting them. That should be on the news at least in the guniness book of world records.

I know it's a little off topic but was there any FWD doing any good .....?

Nope!, its a stick shift that he shifts without a clutch. He makes it to 5th gear by the 8th mile. It sounds like an auto because he does'nt use a clutch.:dsm:

Yea he definatly has 4 or 5 gears he goes thew on a pass. I was there and heard everyone. He is in third just after the 60FT it seems.

1. It has a clutch, trust me on this.

2. 4 gears, not 5.

Well there was alot of other trick stuff on Sheps car but I didn't realize that stuff was missing at first. Both his and Rau's setup are out of this world. Shep still uses a clutch though, its an ACT carbon clutch. I was just wondering how it all works without the clutch master cylinder or if its just hidden somehow inside the car?

I'm a mechanic, trust me I know that it has a clutch, and I was inside of Brents car and HE told me personally that he is in FIFTH gear by the eighth mile.:|

Oh sorry, thought you were talking about Shep's car. Brent I'm sure he is. Last I knew he was running a Lenco 5 speed with really short gearing in the first 4 gears. Keeps the motor on rpm. On those I believe they use an internal hydraulic TOB inside the bellhousing.

For sheps car I have a few ideas. Could be way off here but here goes... What is the lever in the picture below for? Is it for the dog box so he can just pull straight back sequentially to shift? Could it be to activate the clutch? for our Formula SAE car we use a lever to activate the clutch but it is cable driven not hydraulic. I first thought maybe he went with a mechanical cable to save weight of the hydraulics and what not but that does not seem to be the case because if you look at the engine bay pics you can see the hydraulic line for the slave cylinder. Finally the other idea I had was perhaps he went with a new racing type master cylinder like something from tilton racing.

Emergency brake. It allows him to hold the car in place as he lets the clutch up slowly on his clutch. The multiple disc clutches are hard to launch as they have a tendency to engage like a light switch. By holding the car stil with the e-brake he can find the clutch's engagement point as he lifts, hold it right beneath it, then on the launch he lets go of the e-brake "which is probably spring loaded" and also engages the clutch. This makes for consistent launches.

Jake Lehmkuhl (Evil Eagle) uses the same method on his 9 second street car except he uses the factory e-brake which means he actually has to push the lever back down. If you watch his recent incar videos of it you can see him doing it. Unfortunately in John's "in-car runs" you can't see him shifting or using it.
