I've heard this noise once before and it went away. I checked the car out and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary.
However now I'm hearing it again, I think it's drivetrain related.

Both times I've heard it I was pulling away from a stop (1st), stays there even if I shift. It's like rubbing noise....I'm not sure how to describe it. It's also fairly loud, was on the phone today and the person on the other end could hear it.
I think I've heard my front CVs clicking but my hearing isn't too great and the car is loud so I'm not 100% on that.

I know I'm not giving much to go on but with a 3000km trip coming up I'd like to know what it is so I can fix it.

Does it make the car vibrate? Have you removed the transmission mount recently? Are the mounts stock? Are they worn? Is the rubber backing piece on there? I had a similar problem when i did the 5 speed swap to my galant. It would only do it in first and it felt like the car was going to fall apart. Turns out when i put the tranny mount on i didnt center it up (yes there is a little play in there) and it was hitting the mount on the chassis. I moved it and it stopped.

If it is consistent with your vehicle speed it could be the u-joint. Same thing happened to me in my awd outlander a month ago. On a side note: One of the carrier bushings found it's way onto the grass 20ft away, turns out the 3k gt, and the dsm bushings are the same as the outlander as well!

It could also be your carrier bearing going out. About a year ago i heard the a loud rubbing noise and if felt like it was right under me, it is an easy check just jack up your car(secure it safely) and grab your drive shaft(while the care is off) and move it up and down to see how much slack is in it, if there is more than a 1/2inch (1.27cm) play then you need to either buy a new one($$$ and time needed) or buy a 20 Dollar tube of windshield polyurethane and pump it around it, and let it set for one day.
