o2 threw a code, replaced, now poor engine operation

1995 tsi awd.
engine light was on. checked it, the o2 sensor heater was not working. i replaced the sensor with a universal bosch o2 sensor that you have to wire to the old existing harness.
now when i start the car both cooling fans turn on with the motor and die with the motor. the engine has very poor oporation. when running it idles at about
200-350 rpm.and lopes real bad.
i took out the new one and put the old one back in and the motor still runs like shit!!!
it ran like a champ befor i put it on the jack.
i think i might have wired the new one up wrong and screwed somthing else up, but i dont know what.

its also shoots a notisable amount of smoke as well, so the fuel maping is wrong now too

Did you wire the o2 the right way? that's what sounds like is wrong. The sensor is giveing the wrong readings. Also it might be a defect.

Got anyone nearby with a known working O2 sensor? I would say your wiring is incorrect. Please tell me you wired it up to the old O2 plug so you can still swap back?

i already put the old one back in the way it was before i took it out, befor i got engine problems. but my engine still runs poorly. i think i wired the new one wrong and somthing else got fried in the process. i just dont know what????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Although the voltage feed back from the o2 sensor is minimal there is not a very high chance of it "ruining" the ecu. Take the ecu out and check it for burn traces on the board, then report back. Also did you reset the ecu after replaced the o2 sensor?

i unplugged the battery for 10 minutes then plugged back in

Yes you could damage something depending on how you wired it up. How did you wire it?
