420A NV-T350 bad transmission?

So I got my car about 4 months ago from a guy who works at meineke. The car had been his daughters, and he told me before he bought it that when it was cold out the car would make a noise. He also said that the clutch and throw out bearing had just been replaced and it didn't resolve the issue. Now that it is late November and the weather is cold, it seems to be that my transmission is getting worse.

When I start the car in the morning, or after it hasn't been running, I will release the clutch and get out. Then a rattling/grinding noise starts coming from the transmission. If the clutch is depressed, then the noise stops, and once i release the clutch again it starts back up. The gears grind if I try shifting down or up from 2-1, 2-1 while the car is still warming up. If the car has been driving the shifting problems stops. Also while engaged in gear, and driving, and still cold, the transmission makes noise in 1,2,4,and 5th gears.

I have replace the transmission fluid to atf-4 being as it is nv-t350 transmission. And I think that the last owner ran 80-90 gear oil .

Any comments on what you think is going out would be great. or what is wrong. Also I have been thinking about getting this overhaul kit. New Venture A578 5 speed FWD Manual transmission parts and overhaul kits - Drivetrain.com

Sounds like it might be time for a rebuild. If someone ran the wrong type of gear oil it probably destroyed the syncros.

why not replace the fluid and go from there?

First off check here for the noise issues (post 11 gives a good reference to issues and 29 gives you an idea of the slinger); http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/420a-drivetrain-tech/424203-noise-trans.html

As you may already know, there are special synchros in our trannies. That is the main wear point if somebody put the wrong fluid in there. Sounds like you may have some issues with the "paper" synchros

For some reason right now, your link won't come up for me. But if you get to the point that you want a rebuild, contact Zimmer (twicks69) on here. You'll want somebody who knows our tranny and can be trusted.

Yeah I was assuming that it was the paper synchros going out I just wanted some other opinions. I am going to replace the fluid in it at the moment. Does anyone have any recommendations besides the amsoil synthetic and atf-4? And the rebuild kit i want to get would be about $360. Its an overhaul kit. When I get on my other computer I will repost the link. Ill try and get ahold of Zimmer. Thanks bullett.

Replaced the tranny fluid awhile ago with atf-4, sounds much better, no longer grinds or makes any noises.

How do I say this thread has been solved?

Well update on this whole thing. I believe that yes it is our special "paper synchros" going out due to the previous owner running the wrong tranny fluid. After I replaced the transmission fluid it cleared up the problem soo well. Right now I still get the ugly sound in the winter time, or really cold mornings that last for about 2-5 minutes, but is nowhere as bad as it used to be. Not going to try and rebuild the tranny on this rs because i'm going to sell it and get a gs-t woo.

Yeah I had the same issue.on my 97 eclipse gs same transmission nv-t350 it only happened during the morning first start up then when I engaged the clutch pedal it would go away. eventually it went away completely on its own never had any problems after didn't do anything to it for a whole year then rod knock on my engine crazy and the whole time I thought my Trans was gunna blow the syncros .

For future reference on these cars non turbos
always start with changing the Trans fluid first with Mitsubishi Dia queen
MTF 75w 85w gear lube

But I've been through this many times and it's the tob not being in place correctly ✌

Sorry for replying to an old thread... But I have to clear up the misinformation.

Using 75w-80 in the NV-T350 will destroy your synchronizers.
