noisy lifter(s)

Hi everybody!
Changed my oil+filter today and when I started the car, I could hear the lifter(s) ticking. The oil that I used was 10w-30 quaker state. If I replaced with synthetic would that solve the probem? What do u guys recommend? Also is it ok to drive with noisy lifters?

Noisy lifters sound a lot like a rainbird sprinkler as it turns...tick..tick..tick

If this is the noise you are hearing, you have nothing to worry about. In the absolute WORST scenerio your timing will be messed with because the ECU thinks its engine knock.

Essentially, the biggest issue is that a) its annoying and b) it can hurt performance.

I for one got sick of them and changed them out, I felt a performance difference after that and my friends thought the car sounds much meaner with the tick gone.


As far as eliminating it, you can do a engine flush, and then a oil change this might help make them quiet. As far as the synthetic change goes, it may or may not work. Some people claim switching brands of oils or weights help silence them. If you are in a warmer state, try using 10W-40 synthetic and do a engine flush just before the oil change and see if that helps at all.
