Since I bought my car (1 year ago) every morning the lifters have sounded for a couple of minutes. Lifters stopped sounding when it took its normal temperature. The rest of the day the engine never made noises.

Suddenly, since one week ago, lifters stopped making noise on the mornings and began making noises when the car rise its normal operation temperature. The noise is intermittent, sometimes it sounds and sometimes don't. If I turn off the car for a couple of minutes and then turned on again, lifters wouldn't sound until it reach again the normal temp.

Any idea of my noisy problem? what can I do?

My car is 1G Talon with 80000 miles on it. I change oil every 2000 miles.

Hope someone can help me and give me some advice

There are countless threads on lifter tick. Do a search. You can try using Royal Purple and a better oil filter like Puralator Pure One or K&N.

add some atf about 300 miles before scheduled oil change and see if that helps. You change your filter too when you change oil right?

I'am just about to change oil... who much atf is recomended to add before changing oil? ... and of course I always change oil filter...

Right now I'am using Chevron 10W-40 with Phram (PH3950) oil filter... I always use Penzoil 10W-30 but last time I buyed 10W-40 because of a mistake...

So, maybe my problem is caused by the oil?????

Agreed. Best "mod" I ever did.

They used to be 7.74 apiece, but inflation is a bi***.

I have the same prob. I hear its not bad for the engine It is just annoying. Someone told me to use engine flush at the next oil change, put in a high quality synthetic oil and use a K&N oil filter. The K&N filter is the most important part. Oh yeah right now go buy some techron fuel system cleaner and put that in. This will help the the engine flush. This is what I plan on doing my next oil change. It is supposed to work but I havent done it yet so I can't promise. Good luck to you.

The fluid change will not work for everyone. We played around with different oil weights and additives forever, and in the end we had spent almost as much as a set of the revised lifters cost.

On the other hand, I have heard of the ATF fix working for months at a time.

Ok, tonight I will trow away the Chevron used Oil and will try with the Royal Purple 10W-30. But before changing it I will add 8 oz. of ATF and will use it from my office to my house (30-45mins). The oil filter to use is gonna be a FRAM PH 3950 (the best I can found around here). If it works I will tell you ASAP. :thumb:

If it doesn't works, I will try to take the lifters out to be clean with carbcleaner or brakepad cleaners (as in the www.vfaq.com said).

By the way where can I buy online those lifters?

Thanks and hope ATF and Royal Purple works:thumb: :D

I used some Royal Purple for a while, not to try and cure lifter tick (which I do have), but it didn't help eliminate the tick any. If anything it got a little worse over the course of several months of using it. I'm not saying it's the oil's fault, but that I just don't believe switching oil will help. I'm using Red Line right now and the lifter tick is just as bad. I did pick up a K&N oil filter today to see if that will have any effect, but I doubt it will.

Here's a summary of solutions for lifter tick, these are pretty much all temp solutions unless you replace them:
- Switch brands of oil, mobil 1 synthetic has quite the rep.
- Switch to a heavier weight of oil
- Try Oil Detergents, Restorer, Engine Flush, etc.
- Use ATF to clean out motor
- Use vfaq.com to manually clean the lifters
- Switch type of oil, i.e. from conv. to synthetic
- Switch oil filters, try the OEM Mitsubishi Filters..big and small.

For what it's worth, my 98 GSX now has 253,600 miles on the original engine. Lifter tick has been intermittent until recently when it not only became permanent, but, had obviously spread to more than just one lifter. Assurances from my service tech that it really didn't hurt anything did little to ease my embarassment over this annoying sound. On a lark and in full knowledge of some comments warning of possible seal leaks, I went out and had my oil changed - replaced it with Mobile 1. Within 60 miles, no more lifter sounds at all. It's been a week, now. Absolutely no more ticks. Time will tell how permanent a fix this is for me, but, I'm in happysville right now.

I installed the revised lifters and I am still getting ticking.. So thats not always a guarenteed solution! :(

I dont recommend using heavy oil. I did this to stop smoking to pass emmisions and my turbo acted real bad (almost broke it). the turbo likes thin oil because the turbo bearings float in it and with thick oil your turbo resists spooling and gets real hot!

:talon: I have lifter tick... I tried thicker (engine restore) and now am trying thinner (lucas oil W/ K&N) at any rate, do you think we can complain to the company and get a pettition on recalling lifters to 3g lash adjusters? I was dissapointed to read fish3rboi's post because I want to by the 3g's and fix it to wash my hands of it... it sounds like we have enough dsmers with this problem...huh? -90 TSi AWD 87,007 miles datalogging perfect 750 idle speed.

Thanks for all comments. I never imagine that my problem was so usual.  what I can infer is that almost all DSM cars suffer of the same problem.:barf: :barf:
hope that noise is not as serious as it heard:rolleyes:

After reading all your comments and advices, last night I made the oil change to my Talon. First of all I add 1/2 Qt. of atf to the engine oil and used the car for 30 mins., immediately after that I drain the old oil. I bought 5 qts. of 10W-30 Royal Purple and FRAM oil filter. After changing the oil and filter, I used the car for more less 65miles, and until this moment the noisy lifters have disappeared. I am living in "happysville" too :thumb: and hope stay there forever.

I'am sure the oil wouldn't solve our problem in a permanent way. Maybe as older the oil gets, greater the noise would be...

I will continue hearing my engine and will let you know if something happens...

Thanks.:talon: :thumb:

FRAM filters are made of crap. They are all cardboard inside (including the endcap). Spend the extra 8 bucks and get mobil 1 (11.00). Additionally I prefer mobil 1 synthetic to royal purple...had bad experiences with it and mobil 1 is cheap from wal-mart.

Out of curiosity is there any possible side-effects of using ATF in a motor? Sounds kinda risky seeing as its not compressionable.

As far as I undestood, what everybody here have recommended is to only use atf to clean out engine. As a matter of fact, I only used in that way for a couple of minutes. It seems to work as a Motor Flush... :thumb:

"FRAM filters are made of crap. They are all cardboard inside ..."
I know that FRAM filters are not so good but thats the best I can found here in Monterrey, Mex. DSM cars were not sold here in Mexico. I think in all Mexico are about 50 or 70 DSM cars only, that's why is difficult to found autoparts for my car. I think only Autozone have the stuff :cry: What I'am planing to do is to change oil filter within 3000 miles;

"I prefer mobil 1 synthetic to royal purple..."
Royal Purple Vs. Mobil 1: I haven't use Mobil 1 never, but in the next change I'll be using it... just to see differences:rolleyes:

I bought the 3G revised lifters for $160 a set from Mach V. It was well worth it. If you are going to toe work of taking them out and cleaning them, you might as well just put in new ones and be done with it. Also the lifter tick can be harmful to your car, because if the knock sensor picks it up, you can have retarded timing:rolleyes: for no reason. Mine ticked like mad, but now she purrs like a kitten.... well more like a lion after my 3" exhaust instal. Just be careful when taking off the rockers, one of mine flew down the timing belt cover, and it was a SOB to get out.OMG Hope this helps.

Good Luck doesn't last too long for me... Yesterday lifters tick returns for a while... I think i will go for a set of 3g revised lifters.
Just some question:

Does lifters for sale on MAch-V and Eagle Import Automotive parts, are the same? Any other place I can find it cheaper online?...
;)

See ya,
